If you aren't already inundated with Black Friday ads, you soon will be. Watch out for scams, though. We are already seeing brand impersonation scams and malicious ads. Try going straight to the known-good site rather than clicking on the link in email or ads.

Black Friday scammers are already targeting bargain hunters—here's what to watch out for.

We contributed to a piece on cyber insurance in this week's Arkansas Business. As a small business owner, this is a great risk management component to help recover from the inevitable breach. With our clients who choose to purchase a policy, we calculate that into the overall risk and integrate it into their foundational policy and emergency plans. Good policies will offer recovery services that you couldn't access on your own as a small business, as well.

As cyberattacks become more frequent and sophisticated, cyber liability insurance is now essential for businesses. The U.S. cyber insurance market grew 11.7% from 2022 to 2023, reaching $9.8 billion in premiums. Cyber insurance now covers forensics, legal expenses, customer notifications, and busine...

If you've had our cybersecurity awareness training in your business, you know we try to throw a little humor into it. Without humor after all, what is life? We've found that people are more receptive to the message if they get a laugh out of it. This is one reason we still do hand-crafted and in-person training, even though it's not scalable. Cybersecurity is serious business, but making it fun may be the thing that gets your team past the drudgery and into positive action.

Thoughtfully applied, humor breaks through security fatigue, increases engagement, and fosters a culture of security awareness.

Thinking you are safe because you are small or don't deal in very much sensitive information? I'm sure Internet Archive thought that, too. Hackers breached them and got users' login accounts. No credit cards, no bank accounts, no health records, no PII, nothing of real significance. ...but they still breached this non-profit. If they'll target a beloved site that truly had no enemies, don't you think you'd be a target too?

Internet Archive's "The Wayback Machine" has suffered a data breach after a threat actor compromised the website and stole a user authentication database containing 31 million unique records.

NIST's efforts to update password requirements continue. They've been talking this up for a few years but it's finally in print. Don't expect things to change overnight, though. It takes time to update these complex systems. Also, there some die hard compliance bean counters out there who will "cold dead hands" this one. Sometimes it's hard to give up those easy controls for ones where you have to think.

The latest draft version of NIST's password guidelines simplifies password management best practices and eliminates those that did not promote stronger security.

One constant in the universe is that cyber attackers, phishers, and scammers will always have creative new ways to separate you from your money and sensitive information. We had a similar issue here in Arkansas a few years ago. The state government wisely decided to back down after some indirect advice from industry professionals. This is yet another example of elected officials acting in poor judgement. It's very important for our governments to be appropriately open and honest in these matters lest they lose both the battle against the cyber attackers and the trust of their constituents.

The City of Columbus, Ohio, has filed a lawsuit against security researcher David Leroy Ross, aka Connor Goodwolf, accusing him of illegally downloading and disseminating data stolen from the City's IT network and leaked by the Rhysida ransomware gang.
