Chamois approves new stop signs at two intersections

CHAMOIS — Chamois aldermen voted unanimously on Sept. 30 to purchase three stop signs for two intersections following residents’ complaints about speeding.

Two signs will make Vine and West Second streets a four-way stop. A third will be placed at Cherry and East Second streets to stop traffic coming from Hwy 89. Aldermen also discussed adding a “Stop Ahead” warning sign on the approach to that intersection.

Unterrified Democrat, Johnson net multiple wins during 2026 Better Newspaper Contest

LINN — The Unterrified Democrat brought home seven awards — including three first-place finishes — in the 2026 Better Newspaper Contest, recognizing the newspaper’s work in photography, health reporting, sports coverage, and feature writing from 2025.

UD Editor Neal Johnson led the newspaper’s showing with five individual awards, including two first-place honors. His photograph, “Hit on the Head,” earned first place in Best Sports Photograph, while his story “Kemna credits early detection, vigilance with surviving breast cancer” took first place in the Best Health Story category.

Cemetery walk shares family memories and Chamois history

CHAMOIS — Stories of military service, immigrant families, community leaders, and the everyday lives of earlier generations were shared Saturday, Oct. 3, during the first annual Friends of Chamois Cemeteries Cemetery Walk.

Visitors walked between gravesites to hear presentations honoring Jerry Berry, the Hutchison family, Fredericka Sundermeyer, Norbert Boss, Frank and Dorothy Schollmeyer, and Frank Stonner. Speakers shared family photographs, research, and personal memories, including accounts of loss, perseverance, and humor.

OSAGE COUNTY — Osage County commissioners discussed plans for an Oct. 14 ribbon cutting at the new Westphalia Bridge, reviewed easement offers for the CR 522 bridge project, and awarded a $28,625.96 culvert replacement contract during their Sept. 29 meeting.

Fatima splits games with New Bloomfield, North Callaway

Fatima’s offense erupted in a 10-0 victory over New Bloomfield Tuesday before the Comets found themselves on the other side of a pitching duel in a 2-0 loss at North Callaway Wednesday.

Fatima collected 10 hits and scored five runs in the second inning on the way to ending the New Bloomfield game after five innings.

Chamois R-1 board members hear lease purchase options for new HVAC system

CHAMOIS — Chamois R-1 school board members listened to the details of the lease purchase option to finance a new Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system at their meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

“This is the Plan B option after running the bond issue,” L. J. Hart & Company Senior Vice President Neil A. Branham explained. “Your assessed valuation calculation for the last five years has grown at 4.9% on average. That’s great growth.”
