Data Security, Inc., manufactures two product lines: degaussing equipment to erase classified and sensitive data stored on magnetic tapes and hard drives which renders the data unrecoverable and destruction equipment used to physically damage hard drives, thumb drives, and solid state storage devices. These products are tested and approved by the National Security Agency (NSA) and are listed on their approved Equipment Products List-Degaussers (EPL-D).

It only takes one mistake to create a breach. Here are three principles I encourage every organization to adopt today:

1. Treat all data as high sensitivity.

High-security protocols protect across all classifications. Lower protocols will never cover higher sensitivity protocols. You can go down, but you can’t go up.

2. Audit your processes regularly.

Strong equipment is essential, but so is a documented, defensible chain-of-custody process. Regulations require both to hold up under formal review or audit.

3. Train for accountability, not just compliance.

Employees need to understand the impact of mishandling data, not just the steps on a checklist. Awareness changes behavior. Procedure alone doesn't.

Your customers don't ask about shred size or equipment specs. They ask: is my information protected?

Can you answer that with confidence?

Confidence doesn’t come from hoping your systems work. It comes from knowing they’re built to withstand the worst-case scenario and having the right expertise behind them.

If it’s time to take a closer look at how your data is being protected, we’re here to help. Schedule a compliance review: https://datasecurityinc.com/contact-us/

As cyber threats grow more sophisticated, "deleted" isn't good enough anymore.

Whether you're managing data destruction for your clients or protecting your own organization's data, determined bad actors can still recover sensitive information.

Degaussers and destruction devices eliminate that risk entirely, giving you a certified, documented, defensible process that holds up to audits and regulations including GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, and beyond.

Learn what it takes to make data truly unrecoverable.

If you've worked with Data Security, Inc.®, it's likely you already know Katie Koepke. She's been at the heart of our operations for 20 years.

She started at our sister company, FireWorks Restaurant then joined Data Security, Inc. ® as a Sales and Marketing Representative, and worked her way through Business Development, Sales, and Service leadership to her current role as Director of Sales & Service.

Katie is someone people trust. She leads with patience, confidence, and care. And while the industry might suggest someone stern and serious, her humor is arguably her greatest strength. Her wit, intelligence, and steadiness are what make her both a great leader and a great person to be around.

"I feel passionate about the importance and necessity of the products we create and sell. To be good at sales, you have to believe in what you’re selling. We aren’t selling blenders, we’re selling protection and security; that’s easy to believe in." she says.

That belief carries into her teams. On what she's most proud of: "The backbone of our Sales Team is tenure. Between our 3 longest-serving Representatives, they've worked a combined 57 years with the company. Because of their history, experience, and dedication, new representatives who join our team have a lot of mentors to help guide them through the process and improve their knowledge."

She's equally proud of the Service Team, which only began full operations in 2016. "Over the last 10 years, we've grown our team, improved our customer service, created extensive internal and customer-facing SOPs and instructions, and generated new revenue streams in the process. Starting a team from the ground up has been both challenging and very rewarding."

Katie has also watched the industry develop alongside her career. "The biggest change I've seen is in the level of importance the commercial industry has put on protecting data. 20 years ago the policies for protecting commercial data were limited and vague. Those policies have continued to change and evolve along with changes in media to accommodate different storage technologies, as well as the substantial increase in how much data can be stored on storage devices."

And she's not one to accept the status quo. "I believe every organization should be going above and beyond to protect sensitive data and not just limit themselves to substandard requirements."

Her role touches nearly every part of the company. "My days rarely look exactly like the last. I get to collaborate with pretty much all departments: Admin, Engineering, Manufacturing, Accounting, and Marketing. There's never a day that goes by that I'm not working with other teams to provide the best products and service to our country and our customers." And through it all: "I love a challenge, and my career here has always kept me on my toes."

When she’s not at her desk, you’ll find her outdoors running, gardening, golfing, or walking her golden retriever, Oswald.

Thank you, Katie, for everything you do and for continuing to take on whatever comes next.

If your organization stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data, PCI DSS requires secure destruction of the data when it is no longer needed. That means rendering data unrecoverable through approved methods like degaussing or physical destruction. Data Security, Inc.® works with businesses, processors, and service providers to ensure their disposal workflows meet PCI DSS: v4.0.1 and NIST 800-88R2 standards.

World Backup Day is more than a reminder to save a copy of your files. It’s a call for organizations to understand their full data landscape—what they store, where it’s stored, and how that information is secured throughout its lifecycle. With unstructured and shadow data on the rise, clear company standards for storage, access, backups, and end-of-life destruction are essential. We can help strengthen those processes so your data stays protected from start to finish. Learn more: https://datasecurityinc.com/contact-us/
