Did you know that some of the world’s most important crops—like coffee and cacao—are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and environmental conditions? Understanding how they respond to a warming world is critical for the future of agriculture.

For nearly twenty years, Biosphere 2 has partnered with LI-COR Environmental to study how ecosystems function by measuring the invisible gases that move through them. In our video series, Stories from the Living Lab, we invite you inside Biosphere 2 to see how this science comes to life.

In this second episode, we step into the Rainforest biome to explore how newly introduced coffee and cacao plants are helping us better understand the carbon cycle. By recreating different temperature conditions, our researchers can study how these crops respond to environmental stress—insights that can help inform how they are grown around the world.

Using tools like the LI-7810, paired with the Smart Chamber, our team measures both soil carbon fluxes and even the gases released directly from tree stems. It’s a fascinating, detailed look at how carbon moves through these systems—and how technology helps us uncover it.
