Five Nines

Five Nines We are an IT/Tech Operations Partner helping organizations drive success through strategic, secure, and scalable IT solutions.

To love what we do and be the best at it
To build strong partnerships with our clients to drive their success
To recognize what is most important in life and live each day to its fullest. Three statements that a company was founded on and are unchanging today. In 2006 Nick Bock & James Bowen were two independent IT professionals competing for the same contract. After many months of back-and-forth, the two finally decided to meet for an hour over a cup of coffee. What was supposed to be one hour turned into an afternoon. What they discovered was both independently wanted the same thing out of a business and life – being intentional and purposeful, and making a business that was about relationships and partnership as much as it was about technology. Nick and James decided to start from scratch with a true 50/50 partnership. A lot of time was spent going through the necessary steps needed to start a new company, and the last piece needed to get started was a brand name. They spent several hours at an old sandwich shop at 70th and Van Dorn trying to come up with a name, a brand, a simple representation of what they were building together. James would later say that they “failed miserably” trying to define themselves that day. Nothing felt right (Not to mention they couldn’t find a name with a good domain name available). Late that night, away from the noise of the sandwich shop, they “had it.” Five Nines. 99.999% Uptime. The perfect metaphor for a Managed IT Services business that was focused on reliability and high performance. That was over 11 years ago, and while the beginning of Five Nines remains sentimental, the story is being written every day by individuals who believe in what the company stands for, and the client partnerships that grow with every closed ticket. 11 years later Five Nines has grown from two independent IT professionals wanting to create something great, to 3 different locations in Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney, Nebraska. Five Nines supports over 250 clients in Nebraska, leveraging technology in all forms to drive the client’s business success. Five Nines professionals come into work every day ready to advise the best IT solutions for businesses through Managed IT Services. A unique service model sets Five Nines apart, giving clients their own Primary Engineer to work with on a consistent basis, backed by a team of engineers that work hand in hand to support each client. This model has helped to provide clients with an experience of reduced costs, accelerated growth, and increased productivity – driving Nebraska businesses forward. What started as two passionate professionals competing for a contract has morphed into 80+ experts who love what they do, who connect with clients to build strong partnerships, and who aim to live a life of purpose and intent. Being the largest independently owned IT company in Nebraska, Nick, James, and the rest of Five Nines still go into work every day wanting to improve and streamline the lives of the clients they work with, and the unchanging desire to do so is what has pushed Five Nines forward. 🏥🤝 Powering Iowa’s Healthcare Future, Together!

Last week, Five Nines was proud to sponsor the IHLA Fall Conference, where our very own Josh connected with Iowa healthcare leaders to exchange ideas, build relationships, and discuss the challenges shaping the industry.

At Five Nines, our commitment goes beyond technology. 💚 We’re passionate about understanding the unique challenges healthcare organizations face, helping providers navigate IT risks, and building trusted partnerships that allow healthcare teams to focus on what matters most: exceptional patient care.

A big thank-you to the Iowa Healthcare Leaders Association for bringing the healthcare community together and to everyone who took the time to connect with Josh!

We’re proud to support the people and organizations making a difference in healthcare across Iowa.

Hiring cybersecurity talent is challenging. Finding professionals who understand the complexities of healthcare? That’s an entirely different challenge. 🩺🔐

From securing medical devices to protecting EHR systems, healthcare organizations need specialized expertise that goes beyond traditional IT. And finding the right person is only the beginning. Building and sustaining that expertise takes ongoing investment, training, and resources.

At Five Nines, we understand that healthcare IT is about more than keeping systems running. It’s about protecting patient information, supporting clinical teams, and helping healthcare organizations navigate risk without adding unnecessary friction to patient care.

That’s what an accountable IT operating partner brings to the table: the right expertise, a proactive approach to security, and a team focused on keeping your mission moving forward. 💚

🔐 HIPAA, PCI DSS, and NIST CSF. They may come up in the same conversation, but each serves a different purpose!

🏥 HIPAA protects certain health information.
💳 PCI DSS sets security requirements for payment card data.
🛡️ NIST CSF helps organizations identify, manage, and reduce cyber risk.

Understanding the difference is a great first step toward a stronger security strategy.

At Five Nines, we believe better security starts with knowing what you need to protect.

Know what applies. Build what protects.

Since October 1st, our Omaha, Lincoln, and Kearney offices have been collecting new and gently used coats to support the YMCA of Lincoln and People’s City Mission, helping keep our neighbors warm as the colder months approach. 🧥

Along the way, we brought a little extra fall spirit into our offices with soup potlucks, sharing good food, great company, and a reminder of what matters most: showing up for our communities. 🥣🍁

Because making a difference doesn’t always require a grand gesture. Sometimes, it starts with a coat you no longer need, a meal shared with coworkers, or a simple act of kindness that reminds someone they’re not alone.

We’re proud to see our Five Nines team come together across all three offices to support those in need this season. 💙

Let’s make this season a little warmer for everyone. 🧥❤️

🏥 Cybersecurity protects more than data. It helps protect access to care.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month often brings familiar reminders: update your passwords, watch for phishing, and turn on MFA. All important steps. But for rural hospitals, the conversation goes beyond individual security habits. It’s about protecting the communities that depend on them.

Here’s why that matters: Research from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health found that travel time to the nearest unaffected hospital was 4 to 7 times longer for rural patients than for urban patients following a hospital cyberattack.

When a rural hospital goes offline, the impact can extend far beyond its network. For some patients, the next available option may be 30 minutes or more away.

🔐 For rural hospitals, the security perimeter is measured in drive time.

That’s why we put together a practical guide outlining seven areas of a rural hospital cybersecurity plan, aligned with the HHS Cybersecurity Performance Goals:

✅ Governance and risk analysis
✅ Identity and access
✅ Email security and training
✅ Vulnerabilities and devices
✅ Detection and response
✅ Vendor risk
✅ Recovery and continuity

If you lead or support a rural hospital, here's a question worth bringing to your next team meeting:
How long could we keep care local without our network?

"I'll do anything for this company!" 🤝

"Perfect. I have a TikTok idea." 📱

And just like that, everyone suddenly has somewhere else to be. 🫣

All jokes aside, having a team that’s willing to laugh at themselves (and occasionally walk away from my camera) makes the workday so much better. A little fun goes a long way when you're in the IT space!

What sets Five Nines apart? It’s a question we get all the time, and we’re breaking it down!

At Five Nines, we believe IT should be more than just keeping things running. It’s about building a true partnership, taking ownership, and understanding what matters most to your business. 🤝

From proactive problem-solving to helping organizations navigate an ever-changing technology landscape, our team is committed to being a partner you can count on.

🎥 Hear it straight from one of our own as we share what makes Five Nines different.

A firewall is one of the most visible parts of a security strategy. 🔥

It’s also one of the smallest.

Most of what keeps an organization protected happens quietly, week after week. Here is what that actual workload looks like:
🔹 Monitoring: Catching early warning signs before they turn into downtime.
🔹 Vulnerabilities: Applying updates, finding gaps, and prioritizing fixes.
🔹 Access: Reviewing permissions when roles change or people leave.
🔹 Backups: Confirming they run, and regularly testing that they restore.
🔹 Risk: Translating technical data into clear insights for leadership.

None of these are one-time projects. They are ongoing responsibilities. Most leaders agree they matter. Fewer can say with confidence who owns each one.

When ownership is clear, security becomes something you actively manage instead of something you just assume is covered. At Five Nines, that proactive work is how we help organizations keep critical operations running smoothly!

A quick exercise for Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Read through those five layers and put a name next to each one. Any blanks left on the list are well worth a conversation. ✅

Spelling it out, plain and simple. 🔎

Lead your business. We’ll take IT from here.

You focus on the vision, the people, and what’s next. We’ll make sure the technology behind it all keeps moving forward.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so let’s start with one of the simplest ways to protect your business:

Don’t rely on a password alone.

Passwords get stolen. That’s no longer a “what if.”

The real question is: what happens next?

Microsoft research found that multi-factor authentication (MFA) can block more than 99% of account compromise. Even when a password has already been exposed, that second layer can stop an attacker from getting in.

Here’s what that can look like in a real business:

✅ An employee reuses a password that appears in a data breach. MFA helps keep the attacker out.
✅ Someone falls for a phishing email and enters their credentials. MFA adds another barrier.
✅ A former vendor’s credentials are still floating around. Without the second factor, a password alone isn’t enough.

MFA takes seconds while helping protect access to email, financial systems, client records, and more.

This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, take a look at where your business relies on passwords alone. If MFA is available, turn it on.
