Summer is your busiest season. It's also the easiest time of year to climb Google.

Here's a free move most small businesses in Nebraska skip: add one fresh photo to your Google Business Profile every week.

That's the whole tip. One real photo a week of work you're already doing!

Why it works: Google's local search favors profiles that stay active, and listings with recent photos pull more calls and direction requests than the ones sitting untouched since setup. In most markets in Nebraska, almost nobody keeps up with this, so the top of the map is wide open. A few weeks of steady photos can quietly move you past competitiors who set their profile up once and never looked back.

How to start today:
~Snap a quick photo of a finished job or a before-and-after
~Open the Google Maps app on your phone, tap your business, and hit Add Photo
~Add one line with the town name, like "New privacy fence in Seward"
~Set a weekly reminder and do it again next Monday

When's the last time you actually thought about your IT setup?

If you can't remember, this one's worth 60 seconds of your day.

Scenario: Your main work computer dies today. Fried hard drive, stolen laptop, coffee spill; pick your poison. Could you be back up on a different machine within 24 hours, with all your files, emails, and software exactly where you left them?

If you said "yeah, everything's in the cloud", good instinct. But the honest follow-up question is: are you sure ALL of it is?

The usual gaps I find when I look at small business setups:

- QuickBooks files saved to the desktop, not the cloud
- Customer databases in Excel files on one computer
- Scanned documents in a "Scans" folder no one synced
- Design files, job photos, project records on local drives
- Old emails not backed up beyond your email provider's retention

If your business stops working when one specific computer stops working, you don't have a backup, you have a single point of failure with extra steps.

Good news: this is one of the easier things to fix. Proper cloud backup for a small business runs $5-15 per computer per month, and a real setup means you can be operational from a $400 laptop the same afternoon a disaster hits.

Worth thinking about before you need it, not after.

Memorial Day.

This one isn't about me, or any other veteran who came home. It's about the ones who didn't.

I think about that every year on this day. The shipmates, soldiers, airmen, and Marines who never got to start a business, hold their kids, fix their parents' computers, or watch a sunset in their hometown.

Their families bought us this Monday. Every one of them.

I'm grateful for every veteran I served alongside who's still here. I'm grateful for the freedom to build something of my own. But today isn't about us, it's about the names on walls, on dog tags in shadow boxes, on small flags planted in the grass at cemeteries this weekend.

To the Gold Star families in our community: we see you. Today is yours.

To everyone else: enjoy the day with your people. Eat the food. Take the nap. That's part of why they did it. But maybe pause once and say a name.

I'll be off the clock today. Back at it tomorrow.

Quick scam awareness post, especially heading into Memorial Day weekend when scammers target seniors with fake "veterans benefits" calls and "Memorial Day donation" texts. Please share with anyone who might need it.

If you've gotten one of these calls, texts, or popups recently, you're not alone. They're getting more aggressive:

Phone scam: Someone calls claiming to be the IRS, Social Security Medicare, your bank, or "veterans affairs", demands immediate payment in gift cards or wire transfer. Always a scam. Hang up.

Computer scam: A popup says your computer is hacked / has a virus / has been locked, and tells you to call a number. Don't call it. That IS the scam. Close the browser, restart if needed.

Text scam: Unknown number sends a link claiming to be USPS, Amazon, your bank, or a delivery notification. Don't click. These steal your password or install malware.

Email scam: "Your account has been suspended, click here to verify." Never click the link in the email. Go directly to the company's real website if you're worried.

If you've already clicked something and you're not sure if you're in trouble, text me. I'll tell you straight if it's an issue or not. No charge for a "did I just get scammed?" check.
