Why the 3-2-1 Backup Rule Is So Important (2-Minute Read)
The 3-2-1 backup rule is a simple strategy for protecting your data from loss. It says you should keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy stored off-site. This approach dramatically reduces the chance of losing important files due to hardware failure, technology issues, accidents, cyberattacks, or disasters. By keeping multiple copies on different storage types and storing one copy off-site, you create a simple but powerful safety net for your files.
1. Keep 3 Copies of Your Data
Data loss happens more often than most people expect. Hard drives fail, files get accidentally deleted, and software errors can corrupt data.
Having three copies means:1 primary copy (your working files for day to day use) and 2 backup copies!
If one copy becomes damaged or deleted, you still have other copies available. This redundancy greatly improves your chances of recovering your data.
2. Use 2 Different Types of Storage
Not all storage fails in the same way. Hard drives can break mechanically, SSDs can fail electronically, and cloud accounts can experience syncing issues.
That’s why using at least two different storage types reduces the risk of a single failure affecting everything. Like your computer’s internal drive, using an external hard drive or cloud storage. That way, if one type of storage fails, the other type still protects your data.
3. Keep 1 Copy Off-Site
Local disasters can destroy everything in one location. Fires, floods, theft, or power surges can wipe out both your computer and local backups.
An off-site backup protects against these risks. This could be: A drive stored at another location or using a cloud backup service or storing your data in a secure data center such as Liberty Hill Computer
If something happens to your home or office, your data can still be recovered.
