Wednesdays, right through Thanksgiving week. Late summer is the market at its fullest: tomatoes, corn, the last of the peaches. Higher elevations around Lexington start turning before the town does, so market mornings are a good early read on how fall is coming along.

The Alexander-Withrow House has stood since 1789, which means it predates almost everything else standing in Lexington today. It is easy to walk past a building that old without clocking what it actually is. Main Street carries a lot of that kind of history, quietly, without much fanfare about it.

Hull's Drive-In is still running, 319 spaces, one of only two nonprofit community-owned drive-ins left in the entire country, and it has been since 1950. Season usually runs to the end of October. If you have never been, there are still weekends left before it closes for the year.

Seven thousand people, two colleges, one downtown you can walk end to end. VMI and W&L sit a few blocks apart and share the same Main Street businesses have built around for two centuries. Not many towns this size pull that off without one school swallowing the whole identity of the place.

The Rockbridge Regional Fair and Expo runs September 10 through 13, and this year's theme is Stars and Stripes Over Carnival Lights. County fair in the truest sense: livestock, midway, the whole thing. Two weeks out. A good one to get on the calendar before fall gets away from everybody.

Get this one right and you sound like you are from here. VMI's teams are the Keydets. Not Cadets. Keydets. It started as an old phonetic spelling, stuck, and became the actual name, and locals say the Institute about as often as they say VMI. Same downtown, a few blocks over, W&L's Generals. Two colleges, one walkable town of about seven thousand. It works better than it sounds like it should.

Look down next time you are on Main. The brick sidewalks are not smooth, and that is not age or neglect. They were made textured on purpose. Chilhowie Brick Plant turned them out between 1880 and 1910, ridged so people and horses could hold traction on Lexington's hills in the wet. A hundred and forty years later they are still doing the job they were designed for. Not many towns have a detail that good underfoot.

Pulsar 12,000-watt dual-fuel generator — $849.99 in Lexington, more than $500 under the $1,399 retail. Dual fuel matters more than people think: when a storm comes through, whichever one you can actually get is the one you want to run. Uriah has it at 125 Walker St. 30-day warranty, and layaway is free.
