Sunday, Jaylen let a bolt fly at 40 yards and missed just high. He was disappointed, but hunting has a funny way of teaching you that sometimes the moment just isn’t yours yet.

Then came the rain. All week this young hunter waited for another chance.

Last night, it finally let up enough for us to sneak out.

With about 15 minutes of light left, we watched deer move in and out with nothing giving him a shot. Then Jaylen spotted one walking down the path toward our Down & Out blind.

After a little grazing in the Millborn food plot, the opportunity finally came.

He settled in, squeezed the trigger, and made an absolutely perfect heart shot. That deer didn’t make it 40 yards.

His third deer at just 10 years old.

As a dad, these are the moments that hit me differently. I know there will come a day when he won’t need Dad sitting beside him. He’ll make his own plans, hunt his own spots, and probably be the one telling me what I’m doing wrong. 😂

But right now, I still get to sit beside my little boy. I get to watch the excitement on his face, hug him after a perfect shot, and walk through the woods together to find his deer.

The deer are special. The memories are everything.

So damn proud of you, Jaylen. I hope we get a whole lifetime of walks like this together. ❤️🦌🏹

No backup plan. No comfortable place to retreat to. Just you, the mountains, and the decision to keep moving forward.

Hunting has a way of reminding me that the best things in life usually live on the other side of uncomfortable.

Burn the boats. Chase what sets your soul on fire. Find yourself somewhere wild. 🏹🔥

Sometimes you just gotta get away with the crew. 🍻🏕️

Life gets busy. Work piles up. Responsibilities never stop. But these are the days you’ll wish you could go back to.

Make the trip. Sit around the fire. Tell the same stories for the 100th time. Laugh until your stomach hurts.

Always make time for your crew. The memories are worth more than whatever you thought you were too busy doing.

I’ve been privileged over the years to be there for and help with a lot of “firsts,” and today was another one I won’t forget.

We started the day by completely blowing a stalk on this deer and his two bachelor buddies. From there, we stayed after them for nearly four miles, basically making one giant circle through the country.

Around 4:30, I finally watched this buck bed down and we started putting together a game plan. I had him pinned at 53 yards and gave Cole some highly sophisticated smoke signals 😂 to point him in the right direction.

Cole slipped over the ridge, closed the distance, and got a 30-yard opportunity. He made it count.

And of course, because nothing can ever be easy, the buck dropped down into some of the gnarliest stuff imaginable. 😂 A little extra work at the end just to make sure we earned every bit of it.

What an honor getting to be part of Cole’s first archery deer. There’s something pretty special about watching all the miles, blown stalks, patience, and work finally come together.

Congrats, Cole. You earned this one. 🏹🦌
