BUSINESS SUCKS. ... GOOD

Maybe a Slow Market Is Exactly What the Furniture Industry Needs.

And Why the Furniture Industry Is a Perfect Case Study. (With 8 Ways To Fix Your Business Irrelevance NOW)

All I seem to read lately is doom and gloom about business—sales are down, consumers aren't spending, traffic sucks, costs are up, housing is stalled, and uncertainty is everywhere.

And maybe that's part of the problem.

We're becoming so obsessed with what's WRONG that we're missing the enormous opportunity sitting right in front of us.

Slow markets don't just create problems.

They Create Permission To Question Everything, Fix What's Broken, Reinvent What Isn't Working, And Take Market Share While Everyone Else Is Busy Bitching About How Bad Business Is.

Maybe business sucking isn't the problem.

Maybe wasting the opportunity is.

What If the Biggest Problem in the Home Furnishings Industry Is That We Don't Know What We Don't Know?

READ ON...if you dare to be humbled

People who don't know what they don't know—but are absolutely convinced they do.

Reading this post about the Dunning-Kruger effect.

And immediately I thought:

HOLY !@ #$.

Someone finally came up with a scientific explanation for half the stuff I've been RANTING about for decades.

The Dunning-Kruger effect, in simplified terms, describes a cognitive bias where people with limited knowledge or expertise can overestimate their competence.

But here's the fascinating part:

THEY DON'T KNOW ENOUGH TO KNOW HOW MUCH THEY DON'T KNOW.

If You've Ever Failed, Questioned Yourself, Wanted to Quit, Or Had to Rebuild Your Life, I Hope You'll Find Something Worthwhile in These Pages.

For years, I wasn't sure I would ever write this book.

It's easy to talk about success.

It's much harder to talk about bankruptcy... divorce... bad decisions... disappointment... and the moments that make you question everything.

For more than forty years, I built brands, promotions, and companies. I’ve won virtually every marketing award there is, but that is not what this book is about.

I do share some remarkable accomplishments.

Not to say, "Look what I did."

But to prove that failure is never the end—unless you decide it is.

I survived by never stopping...

* Thinking.
* Challenging conventional wisdom.
* Innovating.
* Creating.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE MISTAKE IN THE FURNITURE INDUSTRY...
...isn't building the wrong product.

It's THINKING, SELLING & REACTING exactly like everyone else.

Every company at the Las Vegas Market has invested millions.

Manufacturers have invested in product development, innovation, manufacturing, and beautiful showrooms.

Retailers have invested in floor space, merchandising, inventory, talented people, and building customer trust.

Yet too many are still competing EXACTLY the same way, for decades.

* Better quality.
* Better comfort.
* Better features.
* Better value.
* Lower prices.

When everyone claims to be better...
Nobody is different.

That's why consumers struggle to choose, and retail traffic is suffering!

* That's why retailers are fighting harder than ever for store traffic.
* That's why manufacturers are investing millions...only to compete on price.

This is where strategy becomes your biggest competitive advantage.
This is where I help companies separate themselves from everyone else, and ...

NO, I am NOT a Marketing Consultant
I'm a brand strategist who helps companies become the brand everyone else has to chase.

The BIG WHY...

That's why retailers struggle to stand apart.

They get the same pedestrian product descriptions pushed out to EVERYONE that totally miss the mark for today’s consumers

And that's why manufacturers and retailers end up competing on price instead of preference.

The uncomfortable truth?

Most companies in our industry don't have a product problem.

They have a positioning problem.

Manufacturers need retailers who believe in their brand—not just their products.

Retailers need brands that give customers a compelling reason to walk through their doors instead of clicking "Buy Now."

Both are fighting the same battle.

Not for market share.

For relevance in today’s consumers' mind.

For more than 40 years I've helped transform consumer brands, with the last 25 years dedicated exclusively to the home furnishings industry.

I've learned one lesson that never changes:

* Products can and are copied.
* Technology catches up.
* Pricing changes.

But a powerful brand position is incredibly difficult to duplicate.

That's what creates demand.

That's what gives retailers confidence.

That's what gives manufacturers leverage.

I'm a strategic brand advisor who helps manufacturers create brands retailers want to floor...and retailers create businesses consumers want to choose.

While I'm at Las Vegas Market, I'm setting aside time for complimentary executive strategy conversations with both manufacturers and retailers.

* NO proposal.
* NO sales pitch.
* NO obligation.

Just an honest conversation about one question...

If your biggest competitor offered the same products at the same price tomorrow...

Why would customers still choose you?

Because the companies that win tomorrow won't necessarily build better products.

They'll build better reasons to buy them.

**IF I SAT DOWN WITH YOUR EXECUTIVE TEAM FOR 30 MINUTES...**

These are the questions we'd answer.

1- Why should consumers remember your brand - not just recognize it?

2- What truly separates you from every other manufacturer in the building?

3- Are you creating consumer demand, or are you waiting for retailers to create it for you?

4- Could every salesperson on your floor explain your advantage in under 30 seconds?

5- Are your retailers selling your value, or negotiating your price?

6- If foot traffic in your best stores dropped tomorrow, would your brand still find its way to consumers?

7- Is your strategy built for the next five years of consumer behavior, or the last twenty?

8- If your biggest competitor copied your products overnight, what would they still be unable to copy?

THESE AREN'T ADVERTISING QUESTIONS.

They're leadership questions.

They’re Strategy questions.

The kind that separates the brands people remember from the ones that get replaced.

For more than 40 years, I've helped transform major consumer brands, and for the last 25 years, exclusively in home furnishings.

What I've learned: PRODUCTS RARELY BUILD MARKET LEADERS. A CLEAR STRATEGY DOES

So, here's my offer, for manufacturers and retailers alike.

If you're at Las Vegas Market, I'll spend 30 minutes with you FREE, NO strings attached, just talking through your business, where it's stuck, and where I think the real opportunity is.

No pitch deck. No proposal. Just two people in the industry, talking honestly.

If that's useful to you, send me a message. Let's find 20-30 minutes on the floor.

What if I told you that bankruptcies aren't the real story?

* Everyone blames the economy.
* Higher interest rates.
* Inflation.
* Housing.
* Consumer confidence.

That's the easy answer.

But two recent Furniture Today articles tell a much bigger story.

One examines the wave of bankruptcies sweeping through our industry.

The other details the mounting pressures facing Sleep Number.

I've been writing about these exact issues for years.

* Weak distribution.
* Overreliance on one sales channel.
* Failure to evolve.
* Waiting for the market to improve instead of changing strategy.

These aren't economic problems—they're leadership decisions.
The economy doesn't create weak business models.

It exposes them.

If you're a retailer, manufacturer, or supplier who thinks "it can't happen to us," this is a RANT you need to read.

NEW REPORT: The American Shopper Has Changed. Unfortunately, Much of Our Industry Hasn’t ... What We Are Doing Wrong & How To Fix It.

According to the 2026 State of the American Shopper study,

- Consumers are stressed,
- Cautious, price-aware,
- Digitally fluid,

And increasingly willing to abandon brands, the second somebody else offers a better experience.

And what is much of the furniture and mattress industry doing in response?

Running another:

“SAVE UP TO 70% OFF PRESIDENT’S MEMORIAL TAX REFUND LIQUIDATION SUPER BLOWOUT.

”Brilliant...

Nothing says:“

We understand modern consumer psychology,”…

- Like inflatable gorillas,
- Fake urgency,
- And financing banners that look like a hostage negotiation. (Which they can be trapping consumers with 30%+ interest rates.)

The study literally says consumers are:

- anxious about spending
- focused on savings
- worried about the future• trying new brands
- demanding convenience
- expecting omnichannel experiences
- influenced by social content
- shopping BOTH online and in-store
- willing to leave brands instantly for better value or experience

And our industry’s response?

“FREE BEDFRAME WITH PURCHASE!!!

”The arrogance of ignorance is undefeated.

Consumers Aren’t Looking For “Cheap.”

They’re Looking For CONFIDENCE.

Consumers don’t wake up saying:

“Honey… I hope we find a sectional with 17 fake markdown stickers today.”

The Mattress Industry’s Favorite Hobby:

Explaining Why It’s Not Their Fault … When It Is And I’ll Prove It

I just read the latest article in Furniture Today about mattress executives discussing “industry challenges,” consolidation, premium products, online disruption, and all the usual corporate therapy-session talking points.

And honestly?

• This category deserves its problems.
• Not because consumers stopped caring about sleep.
• Not because people suddenly decided mattresses aren’t important.

But because the industry spent YEARS hiding behind

• bloated pricing,
• fake differentiation,
• endless “50% OFF” events,
• and a distribution system built like it was still 1998.

Now the walls are cracking… and suddenly everyone wants sympathy.

YOU DON’T HAVE A MARKETING PROBLEM

You Have a Marketing Intelligence Problem—And It’s INCREDIBLY Expensive

Why Most Manufacturers Are Spending More…
and Getting Less Than Ever Before.

**DON’T BE FOOLED (AGAIN):
THE REAL COST OF “HIRING MARKETING” IN THE HOME FURNISHINGS INDUSTRY**

Why Most Manufacturers Aren’t Under-Marketed…

They Have a Marketing Intelligence Problem. That is costing them 10 thousands of dollars every year.

AND....How to fix it NOW
