While so many businesses have to close their doors (hopefully temporarily), their websites are still open. And in many cases, their sites have become more important parts of their businesses, so it's important to make sure your site is up to date and easy to use.
In an effort to improve security, everyone now has no choice but to stick their passwords to their monitors. They should've come to my presentation last year about forms and security issues.
Thanks to everyone that came out to the Yummy Pig for my presentation on email newsletter usability. I'd been waiting 7 years to speak on that topic, as I held onto several emails perfect for it. I had a lot of fun giving the presentation and I think the audience had fun listening to it.
This is why we are paranoid for our clients, especially political ones, when it comes to buying domain names. We encourage them to buy the ones with their names... even if they don't plan to use them. But also we recommend being sensible - you can't guess every possible domain, but you should get the ones that people will likely guess to be your own.

In case you haven't heard, April 21 is "Mobilegeddon"... That's the day Google changes it's mobile search rankings to bury non-mobile-friendly websites (see link below for more info). Is your site ready? If not, we can help. Contact us today.
When it comes to search on mobile devices, users should get the most relevant and timely results, no matter if the information lives on mobile-friendly web pages or apps. As more people use mobile devices to access the internet, our algorithms have to adapt to these usage patterns. In the past, we’v…
The latest version of Firefox browser has eliminated support for the tag and blinking text in CSS. I don't see blinking text on the Web much anymore, thankfully. But when I do, each time I die a little on the inside ... To a long life with no more blinking text! ;-)
Facebook must've done some usability tests to learn that having timeline events alternate left and right is really annoying. On personal timeline pages they put the timeline in the right column and other stuff on the left. But people focus more on the left side, so the important part (timeline) should have been in that column. Now if they would fix this page.
Who knew? Learning about usability never ends.
Feline users require special considerations, including larger tap target zones for paws, continual animation, and audible vocalization.
Today is Huberspace's 10th Anniversary! July 1, 2002,we opened for business and have been building a better Web, one site at a time.
Thank you to all of our wonderful clients... and our not-so-wonderful (ex)clients, who still taught us a lot.
We will have more regarding this milestone as the week and/or month progresses. Stay tuned!
This Fat Tuesday is the perfect day to announce that my new app, Daily Toast, is available on the App Store. The app is a drink-a-day calendar - a different holiday for every day of the year and a mixed drink to go with it.

We're very excited to announce our first Android app! It's a drink-of-the-day calendar, where we found a holiday (no matter how crazy) for every day of the year and a cocktail to go with it. Check it out!
Facebook is tormenting us... We had 99 likes, and then someone else liked us... and the number stayed at 99!
Funny stuff, and very true... at least of programmers that have no respect for users and usability. Not us at Huberspace. We love our users! :)
Hahahaha hit like if you've ever felt like this!

Come see me talk about how to create your own basic business website, and how to do it right!Yes, I'll be telling you, for free, how to NOT use my services.
I'm just learning about this now? All those corrections I made... are wrong again!
I had this sitting in my inbox for the longest time, and the question gets asked frequently enough these days, so I decided to post it to my Web site.
With Facebook, LinkedIn pages and blogs for businesses, does your business still need a regular Web site?
Yesterday, I celebrated Huberspace's 9th year in business. And I did it the only way I know how - with a fine cigar! :)
Photo of me doing my presentation... Nice and relaxing for once, to sit back and talk. (Though it doesn't take too long for me to get on my feet, when I get really immersed into my presentation!)
Thanks to my wonderful guests who, with their busy schedules, made it out to see my presentation this morning.
For those who missed it, it was... interesting. Due to technical difficulties, I wasn't able to show the presentation on their projector screen. So I had to modify a heavily visual presentation to be completely verbal on the fly. It went well, considering the constraints.
Next week, I will be giving another exciting presentation to the Loudoun Network Alliance. It will be at Velocity 5 in Lansdowne (formerly the Dock), on Wednesday, June 15 at 11:30am.
I just don't know what I will be talking about. Possibly email newsletter usability, or some other kind of usability (of course). Whatever it is, you will be surprised and will learn a thing or two. Stay tuned, and RSVP today.
Tonight on O'Reilly, 2 clients of mine who essentially agree with each other are going to be debating the same topic. this should be interesting... Or completely the opposite. Either way, I'm rooting for my client. ;-)
By the way, if you see me (Jim Huber) at the LoudounSBDC event tomorrow ( http://sbdc.huberspace.net ), and you tell someone else that "Huberspace builds Web sites you can navigate with confidence," we'll give you a certificate for $75 free advertising for Google AdWords (while certificates last, and they're only good for new Google Adwords accounts). At very least, come say hi!
The fourth annual Building Business Together event, like its predecessors, is a daylong celebration of the entrepreneurial spirit of Loudoun's small business community. Welcome to the event website. We hope to welcome you in person to a grand day of educational and networking opportunities on Apri
Meet us tomorrow (4/28) at LoudounSBDC's annual event, for which we're platinum sponsors!
It's a great opportunity to learn ways to build your business for a mere $80. Check out their site at http://sbdc.huberspace.net for more info.
At their silent auction, be sure to bid on our donation, a user test of your Web site, to find out how your site can work better for your visitors.

It's not all good news from Huberspace...
Our political writer, Kathryn, passed away this weekend. I (Jim Huber) worked for her before starting this company. Nearly everything I know about political Web design I learned from her. She was my mentor. My company is a small part of her huge legacy. She had an impact on many people, across the country and around the world. There are few people like her. She'll be missed.
Merry Christmas Huberspace customers! Your site is getting the server upgrade... and socks. ;-)
Celebrate the New Year with 10% off a mobile Web site design.
Mobile Web sites are essentially simplified versions of your regular Web site. They're made to be easy-to-use for people on the go, using their big fingers to navigate around your site on tiny little devices... :)
Why go mobile? See follow up post...
Call or email me ([email protected]) today to get started!
Offer expires 12/31/10.
Excellent! One of our clients' was on the O'Reilly Factor tonight, AND their site was shown on the show! Okay, it was just a printout, and was so the other guest could (dishonestly) criticize my client. But at least it made us look good (and the other guest made himself look like an jackass).
We'll be waiting...
We'll
be sponsoring a tee at the Loudoun Chamber Golf Classic this Monday at
Belmont Country Club.
Attending? Give us your biz card for a free cigar at the tee! Or if you haven't yet "liked" Huberspace Web Design in Facebook, do it! and get your stogie at the tee.
As of yesterday, we've been in business for 8 years! Interesting to see how much the Web has changed, yet how much has also stayed the same.
Few days ago, LoudounSBDC had a party for the people that helped out with their "Building Business Together" Conference. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it and what an incredible event it was. They treat their sponsors and volunteers VERY well.
Presentation went moderately well. Not as good as previous ones... I wasn't as well rehearsed, and my hands were full. Plus with such a wealth of info on the mobile Web, there's never enough time. I would have liked to have shown a few more Web site examples, but time constraints really help keep things flowing.
Thanks to those who showed up to see me. Already got ideas for the next one. Hope you'll be back.
