Giving Back!

The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program serves millions of children every year. This year, CFT adopted two children! One was a six-year-old boy interested in space discovery and dinosaurs. Our other Angel was an eleven-year-old girl that wanted Apple Air Pods and a new pair of shoes. We were asked not to wrap the gifts this year because the parent's will be wrapping them and putting them under the tree. Our company loves to give back and we are so happy that we were able to fulfill the wishes of two children.

Stop Hitting Snooze on Software Updates!

We've all done it. A pop-up prompt tells us a new software update is available and without thinking twice we select, "Remind me tomorrow." Then tomorrow comes... and we hit snooze again... and the process repeats for weeks!

However, software updates are important. Updates help patch security flaws. As hackers continue to find new vulnerabilities, updates are necessary to counter new points of access. Without patch updates, you could be subject to a preventable cyber attack! Considering all the sensitive information we store on our computers, taking a few minutes to update our software is worth the inconvenience.

Who watches the watcher?

Firewalls monitor incoming and out coming network traffic and blocks activity based on a set of rules. Firewalls can be software, hardware or both! There are several different types of firewalls each with a unique purpose. Examples of firewalls include:

-Proxy Firewall: This firewall serves as a gateway from one network to another for a specific application. Additional functionality can include content caching and security by preventing direct connections from outside the network.

-Stateful Inspection Firewall: Now thought of as a "traditional" firewall, a stateful inspection firewall allows or blocks based on state, port and protocol. It monitors all activity from the opening of a connection until it is closed.

-Unified Threat Management (UTM) Firewall: A UTM device typically combines, in a loosely coupled way, the functions of a stateful inspection firewall with intrusion prevention and antivirus.

-Virtual Firewall: This type of firewall is typically deployed as a virtual appliance in a private cloud (VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM) or public cloud (AWS, Azure, Google) to monitor and secure traffic across physical and virtual networks.

7 Ways to Recognize Potential Phishing Emails:

Most people are aware that Phishing emails are the easiest way for cybercriminals to compromise your personal or company information. Cybercriminals continue to tweak their attacks and often use social engineering tactics to increase the likelihood of users falling for fraud, identity theft, or spoofing, which can lead to substantial losses of information and/or money.

According to a recently released Microsoft Security Intelligence Report, cybercriminals are making it harder even for advanced cybersecurity tools to detect phishing emails. So, the best line of defense is still user awareness. Below are 7 ways to recognize potential Phishing emails:

1. The email does not address you by your name.
2. The email requests your sensitive information.
3. The email is not from the company's domain (e.g. an email from Walmart coming from [email protected])
4. The email forces you to click on a website.
5. The link in the email is not a legitimate web address (e.g. jke.exe)
6. There is an unknown file attachment the email instructs you to open.
7. The sender's email name and company does not match the actual email address. (e.g. an email from "John Doe" from "Doe Company" with an email address [email protected]# .com)

06/25/2020

Here are our top 10 cyber security tips for users:

1. Clicking without Thinking Is Reckless-
Just because you can click, doesn’t mean you should. Remember, it can cost you a hefty sum. Malicious links can do damage in several different ways, so be sure to inspect links and ensure they’re from trusted senders before clicking.

2. Stick to your own devices-
Try to limit using another user’s device when possible. Never share your credentials with others, and never give anyone remote access to your computer.

3. Be aware of your surroundings-
Keep an eye on your device. Lock it when you step away from your computer. And never leave sensitive or confidential items at your desk, like post-it notes with your password written on them or USB drives.

4. Keep track of your digital footprint-
When you monitor your accounts, you can ensure you catch suspicious activity. Can you recall everywhere you have online accounts and what information is stored on them, like credit card numbers for easier payments? It’s important to keep track of your digital footprint, including social media, and to delete accounts you’re not using, while ensuring you set strong passwords (that you change regularly).

5. Keep up with Updates-
Software patches can be issued when security flaws are discovered. If you find these software update notifications to be annoying, you’re not alone. But you can consider them the lesser of two evils when weighing up rebooting your device versus putting yourself at risk for malware and other types of computer infection.

6. Connect Securely-
Cyber security tips about this have been dished out by nearly every tech expert under the sun, but many still don’t follow this advice. You might be tempted to connect your device to an unsecured connection, but when you weigh the consequences, it’s not worth it. Only connect to private networks when possible, especially when handling sensitive information.

7. Secure Your Mobile Device-
Security doesn’t end at your desktop. It’s important to get into the habit of securing your presence through your mobile device as well. Use strong passwords and biometric features, ensure you turn off your Bluetooth and don’t automatically connect to any public Wi-Fi, and download with caution.

8. Beware Social Engineering-
When hackers can’t find a security vulnerability, they’ll attack in other ways. Enter social engineering. This type of attack is more of an attack on the mind of the user, rather than on the device, to gain access to systems and information. Especially with the information publicly available online and over social media, cyber criminals come up with creative ways to dupe users.

9. Back Up Your Data-
These days, storage doesn’t cost much. There’s no excuse not to have a backup of important data. Back it up on a physical location and on the cloud. Remember, malicious threats and hackers don’t always want to steal your data, but sometimes the end-goal is to encrypt or erase it. Back it up to have an ultimate recovery tool.

10. You’re not immune-
The most harmful thought you can have is “it won’t happen to me,” or “I don’t visit unsafe websites.” Cyber criminals don’t discriminate in targeting all sorts of users. Be proactive. Not all mistakes can be undone with “ctrl + Z”.

06/01/2020

-Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Security-

Industrial Control System (ICS) is a general term used to describe the integration of hardware and software with network connectivity in order to support critical infrastructure. For example, a power substation uses ICS technologies to control transformers, breakers, etc. Unlike traditional Information Technology (IT) networks, ICS technology runs on Operational Technology (OT) networks that consist of controllers that manage devices by sensing voltage, pressure, temperature, etc. to perform actions (e.g. close an electrical breaker).

Unfortunately, many OT networks lack the cybersecurity protections found on IT networks which makes them more vulnerable to cyber threats. Since our country's critical infrastructure (e.g. electrical plants, water treatment facilities, etc.) run on OT networks, there is a need for cybersecurity solutions that can protect OT networks. To find out more information about ClearFocus Technologies ICS Security services, please email us at [email protected]
