I use a Workshop Model in my ELA classroom, and there have been a bunch of questions lately about how teachers make this work in their room. I get 70 minutes of ELA with each grade level (6th, 7th, and 8th) and this is how I use it:
❤️ 10 minutes of Independent reading. I do this at the beginning of class so that I have time to do attendance, answer questions, and get in a reading conference with at least one student
❤️ 10 minutes of vocabulary which is a mix of instruction and practice
❤️ 10 minutes of grammar which is a mix of instruction, review, and practice
❤️ 20 minutes of reading workshop
❤️ 20 minutes of writing workshop
I post these schedules around my room and go over it at the beginning of the year so that my students know exactly what to expect each and every day. There are rare days where we divert from the plan, but this is typically how a day in ELA goes for us! If you would like a blank, editable copy of this schedule, you can click the link in my bio and get your own.
