Congratulations to Cara Brashears, November’s Wolverine award winner. Each month this peer-nominated award goes to a team member who consistently embodies our culture and the “Wolverine spirit.” The wolverine is symbolic of our company—small but mighty, and more powerful than its size suggests.

Happy National Pharmacy Week! It only seems fitting that we go back to where it all began with one of our favorite pharmacists.

Our founder and CEO Michael Rea was working as a retail pharmacist in Kansas City. He'd decided to become a pharmacist to use his love of math and science to help people. It was going to be his life’s work.

One day, back in 2008, a woman named Betty came into the pharmacy and asked, “Which two of my eight prescriptions can I skip this month?”

She couldn’t afford all of them. You could say this didn’t sit well with Mike.

He went home that night and spent six hours researching Betty’s medications and coming up with ways to get the same treatments for less—way more possibilities than most consumers could or would ever know.

Mike was able to save Betty $3,000 that year and still fill every prescription. An idea was born, one that has now helped millions of people save money on and adhere to their prescriptions.

What took Mike six hours now takes less than a second with RxSS. Think of it like a supercharged pharmacist’s brain. We have an entire team of amazing pharmacists at RxSS who continually curate new clinical savings suggestions—currently more than 38,000 in our solution.

Today, everything we do at RxSS is centered around the question, “Would this help Betty?” Fun fact: Our largest conference room is named “The Betty.” We keep her central to the RxSS mission.

Who doesn’t love a freshly baked cookie in the morning?

Each Friday, Max Kelly, an Application Security Engineer at RxSS, brings in cookies he made that morning. Max does this out of the kindness of his heart. Nobody is asking him to do it. Although, truth be told if he stopped, there would be some disappointed people. When Max takes a Friday off, he is sure to have a co-worker bring in backup cookies. It’s a great way to start your Friday if you can snag one of Max’s cookies.

We asked Max what made him start baking cookies for the team.

“I started doing this at my first job out of college. At that job, I remember seeing a lot of people coming and going, working 60+ hour work weeks. It seemed there was a lot of emphasis on work and not enough on oneself. Mental security is more important than app security. I wanted to make people smile and feel appreciated. The cookies are purely because I truly believe that everyone here deserves to take a moment to smile, relax, and feel good about themselves."

He also leaves an inspirational sticky note next to the cookies. He added those notes when he started at RxSS. “They were something I was experimenting with, and they seem to make folks happy, so they are ‘sticking’ around.”

Thanks Max. We think you are pretty inspirational yourself.

We love to give back here at RxSS. Each quarter we select a local charity to partner with, and for Q3 we chose Giving the Basics. So proud of our team for raising over $1,100 through an employee rock-paper-scissors tournament—not to mention the more than 2,000 hygiene items that were donated.
