We’re honored to share that SMS-ITC has been named a finalist for the Veteran-Owned Business Award at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce s Business Excellence Awards! 🇺🇸

When Scott Self founded SMS-ITC, he brought the habits of military service with him: show up, follow through, and handle the unglamorous details before they turn into problems. You saw that this morning in our post about the “restart to update” prompt everyone keeps putting off. Scheduling patches, tracking every machine, and closing security holes after hours doesn’t make headlines. But that kind of discipline keeps Gwinnett businesses running, and it’s how we work for every client.

Almost every office has someone who has clicked 'remind me later' on an update for weeks. It's understandable, because nobody wants to lose open windows in the middle of a busy afternoon. But many of those updates exist to close security holes that attackers already know how to use.

When a vulnerability becomes public, criminals often start scanning for unpatched computers within days, so a postponed update can leave a door open long after the fix is available. A few simple habits help: restart computers at the end of the day, keep browsers and PDF readers updated along with the operating system, and replace devices that no longer receive security updates. For managed IT clients, SMS-ITC schedules and tracks patches across every machine so updates happen after hours instead of interrupting the workday.

Adding a warehouse, shop, or second office across the parking lot often raises an expensive question: how do you get the network over there? Trenching for fiber or cable can mean torn-up pavement, permits, and weeks of waiting. For many properties, a point-to-point wireless link is a faster and far less disruptive answer.

A pair of radios mounted on each building creates a dedicated, encrypted connection between them, carrying data, phones, and security cameras as if everything were plugged into the same network. SMS-ITC designs and installs these radio data links, including Wi-Fi bridges and microwave line-of-sight systems, and checks line of sight, distance, and interference before anything is mounted. SMS-ITC is a young company with a lot of experience behind it. Our team brings more than 25 years of combined IT industry experience to the businesses we serve, and we chose to put that experience to work right here at home in Lawrenceville.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and if there's one change worth making this month, it's turning on multi-factor authentication, or MFA, for your business accounts. It's free on most platforms, it takes minutes per person, and it blocks a huge share of the account takeovers that start with a stolen or guessed password.

MFA simply means that signing in takes two things: your password and a second proof, usually a code or prompt on your phone. Even if a password leaks in a data breach or gets typed into a fake login page, an attacker without that second step can't get in.

Start with the accounts that matter most: email, banking, payroll, cloud file storage, and anything with remote access to your network. Email should be first, because it's the key that resets every other password. If your team pushes back, remind them it's the same kind of extra step their bank already asks for.

Open the network closet at a lot of small offices and you'll find the same thing: a tangle of unlabeled cables, a switch nobody remembers installing, and wires added one at a time over the years. It works, mostly. But every time something needs to change, someone has to trace cables by hand, and small problems take much longer to solve.

IT infrastructure installation is one of the services SMS-ITC provides to businesses across Greater Atlanta.
