Do you know when the warranties on your MDTs expire?

Warranty expiration should not be the day you start thinking about what comes next.

As part of a fleet review, agencies should know:

• Which computers are still under warranty
• Which units will lose coverage in the next 6 to 12 months
• Which computers are already operating without coverage
• Which units have had repeated repairs or reliability issues
• What the replacement plan is if one goes down tomorrow

An expired warranty does not automatically mean a computer needs to be replaced.

It does mean the agency is taking on more of the repair risk, and that makes it a good time to look at the age, condition, performance, and expected remaining life of the equipment.

Know the warranty date. Know the condition of the fleet. Have a plan before a failure makes the decision for you.

What slows an officer down in the cruiser usually is not one big technology failure.

It is the small things that pile up:

• A computer that takes too long to wake up
• A dock that is loose or unreliable
• A charger that only works in one vehicle
• A router that needs to be reset
• A printer that is missing the right cable
• Different setups from one cruiser to the next

None of those problems sounds dramatic by itself. Together, they create wasted time on every shift.

Good fleet technology should disappear into the workflow. It should work the same way, vehicle after vehicle, without becoming another thing the officer has to think about.

Every one-off MDT configuration becomes somebody’s support problem later.

When a fleet uses different computer models, software images, docks, power supplies, cellular modems, and accessories, even a simple replacement can turn into a compatibility project.

A practical fleet standard should define:

• Approved computer configuration
• Required ports and cellular capability
• Dock and power equipment
• Agency image and software
• Standard accessories
• Warranty and support coverage
• A clear process for exceptions

Not every vehicle has to be identical. But every difference should be intentional and documented.

An MDT sitting on a shelf is not necessarily a ready spare.
Before counting a computer as part of your backup plan, make sure it is:

• Imaged with the correct agency software
• Fully updated
• Compatible with your fleet’s docks and power equipment
• Configured for the correct network, users, and accessories
• Tested before it is needed

The real question is simple: when an assigned computer goes down, can the replacement be placed into service without creating another support problem?

$2.1 million in federal JAG funding is now open for Kentucky applicants.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant supports state and local law enforcement, drug enforcement, crime prevention, courts, corrections, training, technology improvements, victim services, and other criminal justice programs.

Equipment and information-system costs may be eligible when they support a qualifying project and are clearly justified in the application.

Applications go through the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet’s Submittable system and are due August 20 at 5 p.m. EDT. Awards are expected in September.

What if your MDT could change jobs without changing computers?

The Panasonic TOUGHBOOK FZ-56 uses swappable xPAK expansion modules. Need a barcode reader today and a second battery next year? Your IT staff can replace the supported module while keeping the same computer in service.

Needs change. Grants come through. Missions shift. The hardware you buy this fiscal year should be able to keep up without replacing the entire computer.

Kentucky agencies have until July 31 to submit applications for the State Homeland Security Grant Program.

This is not a general equipment grant. Projects must fit one of the current priority areas, address an identified capability gap, and clearly connect to terrorism preparedness.

Eligible applicants include city and county governments, area development districts, local taxing districts, and public school districts.

The application also requires one vendor quote, active federal registration, and supporting documentation. Waiting until the final few days could make an already detailed process much harder.

Current priorities include cybersecurity, protection of soft targets and crowded places, election security, and eligible P-25 radio projects.

When the network gets crowded, who gets through first?

Band 14 is spectrum set aside specifically for public safety. FirstNet users also receive priority and preemption across the network. When needed, Band 14 can be reserved so public safety users are not competing with commercial traffic.

That matters during storms, major incidents, large events, and any situation where thousands of devices are trying to connect at once.

The new Panasonic Toughbook FZ-56 can be configured with optional 5G mobile broadband and Band 14 support, helping agencies take advantage of FirstNet connectivity from the vehicle and in the field.

It cannot create signal where no coverage exists, but the right hardware and network configuration can make a real difference when the system is under pressure.
