In less than 24 hours I was contacted by two of my customers regarding emails they received from someone claiming to have one of their passwords. The email goes something like this: "Hello, I'm contacting you to let you know that I have your passwords. As proof here is one of your passwords (and one of the customers valid passwords is shown). You may be wondering why you should be concerned. Well I'm about to rock your world. I also have all your contacts and video showing you at your computer looking at p**n. If you don't submit $1,000 in bitcoin in the next 24 hours I will send the video of you watching p**n to 7 of your contacts."

The email continues with other threats.

If you receive an email similar to this you should immediately change the password on any account that uses the password shown in the email. This would also be a great time for you to change any weak passwords to strong ones. Examples of weak passwords: flossie1, 3211948, bluebird7. Strong passwords look like this: R@k38g47$Lz. Not a name, birthday or any word/words in the dictionary and you should not use the same password for multiple accounts.

Customers tell me "I'll can't remember all those different passwords". I understand that it seems difficult but here's a way to make it secure and easy to remember. Create astrong 8-10 character primary password that includes upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Something you can remember like P@55w0rD (a play on the word "password". Then for every account you have append the site/account to the end of that like this: P@55w0rDfacebook, P@55w0rDgmail, P@55w0rDmybank, etc.

Microsoft's much-hyped free upgrade offer for Windows 10 ended in 2016, right? Not exactly. The GWX tool may be gone, but all the other upgrade tools still work. The end result is an apparently valid digital license, and there's no evidence that the free upgrades will end any time soon.

Windows 7 isn't going to stop working. Microsoft just won't support it or provide updates. As long as you have a good antivirus program you can continue using Windows 7. However if you're running Windows 7 your computer is probably pretty old and time to replace it anyway. Microsoft provided a liberal timeframe for anyone running Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, and you can purchase Windows 10 and upgrade your current PC if you choose. The life expectancy of computers averages 4-6 years. Apple disables operating system updates on their products after 5 years so if you have an Apple product more than 5 years old you're in the same situation as a Windows 7 user but Microsoft has supported Windows 7 for 11 years. Now you know the real story.
