Account details of 89 million Steam PC gamers are up for sale on the dark web.

Spotted by Underdark.ai on LinkedIn, the dataset is on sale on a well-known dark web forum for $5,000.

A hacker who goes by Machine1337 provided details from the data to prove its authenticity. That has yet to be confirmed, but if you've ever used Steam, now is a good time to update your password.

If you reuse your Steam password on other online accounts, meanwhile, you should also update those services. And keep an eye on your email for potential phishing attacks, especially around the topic of gaming. Those who have multi-factor authentication (MFA) turned on needn't be as concerned, but you may want to change your password anyway, just in case this data breach goes any deeper.

The source of the leak is unclear right now. Steam owner Valve shot down reports that it's linked to cloud software company Twilio.

We have been getting a bunch of these “Antivirus Subscription Renewal Confirmation” or “Auto-Debit” “Auto-Renewal”, “Billing Department “ emails A LOT in the last few weeks. Both at HQ proper and personal emails. And they LOOK 👀 legit. At first glance. And especially for us where we manage and maintain several client’s systems it’s SUPER easy to get confused and think wait…what?

However—it’s NOT legit and DON’T BE FOOLED. It will take a little bit of effort on YOUR part to not get sucked in.

FIRST: If you DO subscribe to one of these legit anti virus services (AND YA SHOULD BE PROTECTING YOUR SYSTEMS—ahem) KNOW what service you have and WHEN you signed up and WHEN it expires. Make a calendar alert somewhere that YOU control.

Second: If you didn’t do number 1 and are NOT sure here are few ways you can check the legitimacy of the email.

✅ LOOK 👀 at the SENDERS email address. What is the domain it’s coming from? Ok yes the “contact name” may say “Billing Dept” or “Accounting” or “Subscription Services” or something “official” but if you do some extra clicking on the contact info you most likely will find the email domain extension is NOT from the REAL company. 9 times out of 10 it’s going to be an at Gmail or Yahoo or AOL even—yes AOL is still around.

✅ READ the whole email. Look for lots of misspellings and horrible grammatical errors. Usually a red flag 🚩 of BS.

✅ CHECK YOUR BANK AND YOUR CREDIT CARD 💳 FIRST. Do not call the number in the email. IF you want to verify with the company go look up the company information SEPARATELY and then COMPARE the phone number in the email to what you find elsewhere. If they don’t match up—it’s probably a scam.

Ok you’ve determined it is a scam, now what?

🦾 Report it as spam
🦾 Gleefully delete it 📧
🦾 Block the sender (though chances are it’s going to be a one hit wonder from that email address anyway but ya never know if that email will be used again in another campaign)
🦾Stay diligent and aware
🦾Ensure your LEGIT antivirus programs are updated and you run regular malware removal scans

IF you do get hit with viruses or malware call 📞 us. We can help. 🤓💻💿⌨️
