In our ongoing quest to demystify the technical considerations regarding subwoofer performance, in order to illuminate the fundamental tradeoffs in loudspeaker design, as well as reveal examples of hyperbolic “Marketing” specs, we will continue to share relevant Klippel test data, to showcase what sets Audiomobile apart from other brands — which we feel is in the interest of the enthusiast audio community.

Having previously revealed that a couple of highly-regarded, $800 - $900 ‘thin’ subwoofers, which both use similar, large voice coil designs, however each failed to meet their rated Xmax specifications, as neither managed to exceed the modest 10 - 11mm Xmax threshold. To help contrast those, we wanted to offer some additional evidence, of other, even more expensive ‘thin’ drivers, to illustrate the reality that drivers designed to minimize depth (2” - 3”), at all costs, will inherently suffer from very serious compromises, one way or the other.

These two drivers each employ premium, Neo motors, but use radically different topologies, yet feature very similar ‘motor-force,’ as well as identical 400W power-handling. With an average cost in excess of $1,200, it’s clear they too opted to follow the dubious path of minimal mounting depth, while sacrificing THE two most crucial subwoofer performance factors; power-handing and linear Xmax. This type of tradeoff is something we cannot abide, as very few applications actually demand that degree of installation compromise. This is especially true when the drivers lack the other critical elements, and thus require a larger enclosure, effectively making the slim mounting depth factor irrelevant.

We trust you will find this info and data useful, as a powerful reference in making informed decisions, as you sort-thru what makes the most sense, in order to fully satisfy your individual bass desires. It’s also worth noting that a 40% Xmax delta (11.9 mm vs 8.5 mm), between two similar size drivers — like our ‘GT2’ series, will produce a substantial and very audible difference.

As Audiomobile exclusively designs and produces unique, low-profile, high-performance drivers, we intimately understand these core tradeoffs like few others, and thus will never produce any product which fails to meet our expectations and standards. As the maxim goes — “Speed costs money… How ‘fast’ do YOU want to go?”

With Summer now upon us, we wanted to share a few images of some unique and imaginative builds we have seen over the past year. As anyone who is paying attention knows, the ‘laser-focus’ of our R&D, is on delivering “form-factor” centric, solutions-based products, that outperform others, regardless of the price. This absolutely matters, as regardless of how ‘great’ something purportedly claims to be, IF it is effectively nearly ‘uninstallable’ in your ride, without requiring substantial compromises, then that’s a rather significant problem. We simply don’t produce any drivers that use ‘cheap’ polypropylene cones, nor any ‘undersized’ voice coil (1.5” or less) motors — which are only employed for the same reasons as poly cones are, not because they are ‘good,’ nor offer any viable advantages.
Given the increasing power of monoblock power amplifiers it only makes engineering sense to increase the size of of voice coil motors — if only to improve thermal performance and reduce reliability issues. There are well-established reasons why high-end home audio and ‘Prosound’ subwoofers exclusively use larger motors, and avoid ‘poly’ cones. Because it’s absolutely axiomatic; Performance, like ‘size — matters.’

As a result, our rigorous R&D features redundant Klippel testing, to insure our specifications always meet or exceed what our parameters state. This is why Audiomobile received the only perfect ‘100’ score on the absolute accuracy of our drivers test data, relative to published specifications. That’s not by accident…

This weekend includes the day we honor and celebrate all those brave and courageous patriots, who have served and in far too many cases, sacrificed their futures, to protect the freedoms which we have collectively enjoyed over the past 250 years. We are forever grateful to those who made that possible.

We hope that our numerous devoted fans and all you ‘car audio zealots,’ enjoy a fun, memorable, and relaxing weekend, with plenty of great tunes + vibes, filled with friends and family, wherever and whatever you choose to do…

‘Flashback Friday’ — Exotics edition! Showcasing some of the master-class work, in ‘Euro’ exotic platforms, from our friends across N. America. Audiomobile is laser-focused on delivering “best of breed” solutions, so regardless if your ride is a Lambo, Ferrari, Porsche or any other sports car, between our Evo, GTS or our larger-format Encore series, there is simply nothing on the market that will deliver the same level of stellar ‘SQL’ —from “freakishly-small” micro-box enclosures, in as compact as .25 cf! This is courtesy of our unique, “Isobarik” DNA driver design, which remains without parallel in the market today.

Another ‘Wayback Wednesday’ PSA post — While it’s been said that; “Something’s never change” — see ‘Physics’ and that people ‘luv’ their music (and rides). That said, it’s also been lamented (by some), that there has NOT been much advancement is the car audio world, though we would submit that’s simply not true.
So here we will present information to illustrate some significant ‘evolution’ in the ‘subwoofer’ realm. While some things like “Hoffman’s Iron Law” — regarding the inherent tradeoffs between drivers low-frequency ‘extension’ and enclosure size, have largely remained unchanged (see ‘delta’ graph), performance has clearly evolved significantly, over the past 25 years.
Case in point being the original W6 — arguably the sub that “put JL on the map.” Back in Y2K, it was viewed by many as the ‘best of breed,’ as it delivered an unusual performance balance, high power-handing (400W), robust Xmax (11.9mm) and relatively compact enclosure vol ( < 1 cf box). However, if you skip ahead 20 years, the landscape is now sub-stantially different.
Today, a more ‘entry-level’ type subwoofer, like the ‘GT2’ 2010 will deliver a performance envelope nearly identical (in Xmax and power-handling) to the ‘W6’ — but actually exceeds it in a few important metrics; First, it features a more powerful motor, requires an inch less mounting depth (4.25”), and due to its unique, “Isobarik” DNA, it’s Vas is literally less than half that of the W6, thus it performs remarkably well in “micro-box” applications (under .33 cf!).
It’s significant the ‘GT2’ also delivers 11.9 mm Xmax (Klippel verified), greater than some of the latest generation, ‘thin’ subwoofers, costing $799 to over $1,500 (see attached Bl symmetry data). That level of performance, in low-profile drivers, remains a relatively rare thing, much like the ‘W6’ was decades ago.
Thus, there are viable reasons ‘why’ Audiomobile drivers remain so highly regarded, and one of the key reasons is, that when we publish specs of ANY of our drivers, you can rest assured they will perform exactly as we say — unlike some other brands. That’s why Audiomobile received the only perfect, ‘100/100’ score, from the recent Klippel testing project.

Here are a few of the most recent builds from Evo to Encore, low-profile 10” and 15” drivers. These illustrate one of the key advantages of every Audiomobile driver — everything we produce is geared towards improving performance, reliability and relevant application solutions. Because, if it can’t effectively ‘fit’ or compromises the viable utility of your vehicle, that’s potentially a very significant ‘horizon problem,’ just waiting to happen. It’s a fact — “Size matters!” Or as we like to say; ‘Form-factor’ is important — and IS directly related to THE long-term happiness with your audio system.

‘Wicked Cool Wednesday’ —
Here is another masterpiece ‘4K’ build, in BMW ‘M’ from the uber-talented team at SIS in Silicon Valley. Incredibly rare scenario to be able to integrate a true, 1,000 watt, 12” SQL sub, in a custom, “corner pocket” fab enclosure, and not forfeit any trunk space, given you can’t really do that with ANY other true, high-perf 12-inch driver — besides the Encore 4412.

For all you ‘Music Lovers’ — especially the ones with truly discriminating taste in bass, we hope you enjoy a wonderful holiday weekend, wherever you may be. If it involves going somewhere, even if just for dinner, we hope your audio system and company, puts a smile on your face.

Also, as a little ‘gift’ to you, we have included a table of driver sizes, to help ‘demystify’ the difference between the cone area of standard drivers — as this frequently misunderstood topic, is often subject to significant “disinformation” by some well known manufacturers. This includes a couple of brands, who, by design, either misrepresent or deliberately overstate their drivers cone area (Sd), or worse, who fail to even include this key parameter, apparently due the substantial reduction in cone area (effectively retarding their drivers output), and their myopic focus on far less critical driver design fundamentals.

The other plot illustrates some lesser known, key factors re the most common subwoofer crossover point, typically in the 60 - 80 Hz. range — which is always best to fine-tune ‘by ear,’ as there ARE clearly nuances that no RTA meter can properly recognize or translate. Plus, depending on an array of factors, there is also the crucial, ‘what you like’ — aka “preference.” This naturally applies to any type of playback system. Enjoy!

Welcome to ‘Wild-side’ Wednesday — Check out this beautiful, ‘killer-app’ Encore 4K solution in an F-150 build. Hard to “shoehorn” this level of true, High-Def bass (with 1 kW 12 or even 15!) into any truck, and still retain much useful space under the seat. But it’s obviously very cool when you can actually manage to make that happen, and in an affordable manner!
