Have you applied to more jobs than you can shake a stick at and never heard anything back -- not even when you are CERTAIN you have the skills and experience to at least land an interview.

It's frustrating.
It's exhausting.
It's disheartening.

IT'S BOTS!

The majority of mid-size to large companies now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen and filter job applications that are submitted online.

And here's a scary stat! 75% of applications are tossed out by the ATS and will never reach the hands of a human decision maker. Some are weeded out because the ATS can't make sense of the format you submit. Some because there are little to no keyword matches. Others, of course, simply don't meet the job criteria.

Now, more than ever, it's critical that job seekers prepare an ATS-Friendly resume to include in that little "copy and paste your resume here" field.

Here are two easy steps to take to get you started in that direction:

1. MIRROR THEIR LANGUAGE
Really READ the whole job description and notice the words the company uses to describe the job. Scan your resume to see which words you're currently using can be replaced with their phrasing. For example, if your resume says "secretary" and the job description is referring to their position as "Administrative Assistant" - change your language to mirror theirs. Or, if you're resume says you "lead a team" and they need someone to "supervise a team," change your language to mirror theirs - use "supervise."

2. YOUR "BEAUTIFUL" RESUME MAY BE AN ATS DUD
Many ATS programs cannot make sense of common resume formats. If you have a resume that's visually stunning on paper, there's a good chance it's an ATS dud.
If you have important information in the header or footer, it's not readable by the ATS.
If you have a side column where you feature your skills, photo, and other details, it may be a jumbled mess to the ATS.
If you're using tables to format your content... yep, no good.
Simple is better for ATS so, use your beautiful resume for times when you have occasion to submit it on paper and convert it into a PDF file as well for including as an attachment when appropriate.

When applying for jobs online and you are asked to paste the content of your resume into a field, use a simpler version of your resume. Try copying the content of your resume and pasting it into NOTEPAD (not Notebook). This will remove all of the features that may be unreadable to an ATS. Do a little formatting in Notepad and save that version of your resume for those copy and paste fields.

There are other steps you can take as well, but these two will help improve your chances of getting past the bots and into human hands!

These sketches are used to visualize and grow various ideas and concepts by hand before moving to the screen. I provide these services as consultation included in the price of your logo if you have ideas but nothing decided, or if you come with no artistic direction and leave it up to me, this is the first line of the order of what we will do to narrow down options to move forward with final design concept.
