Parkland school shooter gets life in prison, without parole

Nikolas Cruz, 24, killed 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland on Valentine’s Day 2018.

A few hours earlier today, a Florida jury recommended life in prison, without parole, for Cruz. It will be imposed at a hearing on Nov. 1 after victim impact statements are given.

The jurors found that on all 17 counts of first-degree murder, the state had proved beyond reasonable doubt the existence of “aggravating factors”, specifically that the killings were committed in a “cold, calculating and premeditated manner”.

Cruz had shot into numerous classrooms on the fateful day, with an AR-15 style assault rifle during a six-minute rampage that also left 17 others wounded.

Thai day care mass shooting leaves 37 dead, most of them preschoolers

A former policeman facing a drug charge burst into a day care center in northeastern Thailand on Thursday, killing dozens of preschoolers and teachers before shooting more people as he fled in the deadliest rampage in the nation’s history.

The assailant, who was fired from the force earlier this year, took his own life after killing his wife and child at home. A witness said staff at the day care locked the door when they saw the assailant approaching with a gun, but he shot his way in. At least 37 people were killed in the attack.

Black market cannabis farm raids uncover human trafficking victims

As more states legalize cannabis, law enforcement officials say they are seeing an uptick in black market operators using suspected human trafficking victims to grow and trim ma*****na sold in legal dispensaries.

But authorities and advocates say helping these victims can be complicated because many don't admit to being trafficked and are unwilling to work with law enforcement agencies to take down smugglers and dealers.

Gunman who livestreamed himself shooting at people arrested

Ezekiel Kelly, who livestreamed himself driving around Memphis shooting at people, killing four and wounding three others in seemingly random attacks, was arrested after crashing a stolen car in Memphis, Tennessee. Kelly, 19, was released early from a prison sentence for aggravated assault.

The hourslong rampage shut down much of the city as police warned people to shelter in place. Authorities locked down a baseball stadium and university campuses and suspended bus service as frightened residents wondered where the assailant might strike next.

Cleotha Abston, the man charged with kidnapping a Tennessee woman jogging near the University of Memphis last week, had spent 20 years behind bars for a previous kidnapping. Abston was arrested by U.S. Marshals after police detected his DNA on a pair of sandals found near to where Eliza Fletcher was last seen.

While Fletcher has not been found, Memphis police said in the affidavit they believe she was seriously injured in the abduction, which was caught on surveillance video.

Inmate Population In Indian Country Jails Increased 8% At Mid-2021

The inmate population at Indian country jails increased 8% at midyear 2021 to a total of 2,180 inmates held in 80 jails, from the 2,020 inmates held in 82 facilities at midyear 2020, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) said in a report this week.

The midyear 2021 inmate population was 25% lower than the midyear 2019 population, when 2,890 inmates were confined in Indian country jails. A comparison with midyear 2019, along with midyear 2020, is necessary to provide a more accurate picture.

Why? Because the midyear 2020 numbers were a 30% decline when compared with the previous year (i.e. midyear 2019 to midyear 2020), and the lowest since 2004, mostly due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic across all spheres of life in that year.
