Do I own enough Diskettes?

The first transatlantic fiber-optic cable that connected the United States to Europe in 1988 is being pulled out of the sea bed right now, marking the end of an era in telecommunications.

This is the historic TAT-8, a 6,000-kilometer cable produced from an engineering masterpiece. While earlier cables used copper to transmit electrical signals, the TAT-8 used light, multiplying call capacity by ten and expanding the global Internet we know today.

The cable stopped operating in 2002 due to damage that was more expensive to repair than building new cables with better technology. After more than two decades at the bottom of the Atlantic, specialized vessels are recovering it with the goal of recycling it.

Although its core is fiberglass, the cable is armored with high-quality steel, polyethylene and tons of copper. In today's age, where copper is increasingly scarce and valuable for the energy transition, recycling this technological relic is an industrial goldmine.

I wrote this article for educational and informative purposes based on sources from Subsea Environmental Services Reports and the International Cable Protection Committee (February 2026).
