Pledge of Allegiance Day. Congress formally recognized the Pledge of Allegiance on December 28, 1945. Small changes resulted in: “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Congress added the words “under God” on June 14, 1954, in response to the anti-Communist opinion sweeping the country during the Cold War.
