"Autopilot was on."

That's often one of the first things we hear after a collision involving a vehicle with advanced driver assistance features.

But from a forensic standpoint, that's usually just the beginning of the story.

The more important questions are:

When was the feature engaged?
Were there any alerts or warnings before the collision?
Did the driver respond?
Was there steering, braking, or acceleration input?
What was happening in the seconds leading up to impact?

Modern vehicles generate a significant amount of data, and reviewing the timeline can provide context that isn't available from witness statements alone.

For attorneys handling these cases, understanding the interaction between the driver and the vehicle's assistance systems can be just as important as knowing whether the feature was active.

The answer is rarely as simple as "it was on" or "it wasn't."

Today, we're looking at what really happens when you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Many people assume the apps they see on the vehicle's screen are running inside the vehicle.

They're not.

Your phone continues running the navigation app, streaming the music, and handling your calls and messages. The vehicle's screen is simply displaying that information and sending your touches, voice commands, or steering wheel controls back to the phone.

Every time you skip a song, ask Siri for directions, or reply to a message using your voice, your phone processes the request and immediately sends the updated information back to the vehicle.

Understanding where that information is processed helps explain why both the phone and the vehicle can become important sources of digital evidence.

As our August exploration of everyday technology continues, we're taking a closer look at one of the everyday processes that usually goes unnoticed. Understanding how these technologies work is often the first step to understanding the digital evidence they may create.

Today, let's explore how your phone knows it's entered a new time zone.

You land in another state or country, turn off airplane mode, and your phone updates to the correct local time almost immediately.

Once your phone reconnects to a cellular network, it receives information from nearby cell towers, including the local time and time zone. Your phone uses that information to update its clock automatically.

It also adjusts your calendar, alarms, reminders, and timestamps so everything continues working as expected.

If you're connected only to Wi Fi, your phone may use other information, such as your location, to determine the correct time zone.

Most people never think about it because it happens in seconds, but your phone is constantly working to make sure the time you're seeing is accurate wherever you are.

Many of the features we use every day seem simple, but there's often much more happening behind the scenes than meets the eye. That's what makes modern technology so fascinating.

Today, we're taking a closer look at what happens when you share your location.

When you tap "Share My Location," your phone doesn't rely on GPS alone.

Instead, it combines information from several sources. GPS satellites help estimate where you are, nearby Wi Fi networks and cellular towers help refine that estimate, and in some situations Bluetooth signals can provide additional information.

Your phone compares all of those sources and determines the most accurate location it can before sending it through the app you're using.

As you move, it repeats this process over and over again, updating your location as often as the app requests.

That little blue dot on the map is actually the result of several different technologies working together.

Today's technology is made up of countless systems working together behind the scenes. Understanding how those systems operate provides valuable insight into the digital evidence they may create.

Today, we're pulling back the curtain on what happens when your vehicle downloads a software update.

Modern vehicles contain dozens of computers, and many of them receive software updates just like your phone.

Before anything is installed, the vehicle downloads the update and checks that every file arrived correctly. It usually waits until the vehicle is parked before beginning the installation.

The update doesn't happen all at once. Different computers throughout the vehicle are updated one at a time. Some receive security improvements, others fix software issues, and some gain entirely new features.

What looks like a simple notification on the dashboard is actually a coordinated update taking place across multiple systems throughout the vehicle.

The devices we rely on every day are constantly communicating, searching, and making decisions in the background. Taking a closer look at how they work helps us better understand the technology we depend on.

Today, we're exploring what your phone is actually doing when it displays "No Service."

When your phone displays "No Service," it doesn't stop trying to connect.

Instead, it's constantly looking for a usable cellular signal. It checks nearby cell towers, measures how strong their signals are, and determines whether your carrier allows your phone to connect. If it finds one, it reconnects automatically.

If it doesn't find a signal, it keeps searching as you move from place to place.

Meanwhile, your phone continues doing many of the things you expect. If you're connected to Wi Fi, apps may still work, emails can still arrive, and internet based messages can still be sent.

"No Service" doesn't mean your phone has stopped working. It simply means it hasn't found a cellular network yet.

As we continue our August look behind the scenes of everyday technology, let's take a closer look at what really happens when you delete a photo.

Deleting a photo doesn't immediately make it disappear forever.

On many devices, the first thing your phone does is move the photo into a "Recently Deleted" folder. Think of it as a recycle bin. The photo is removed from your library, but it's often still there until the retention period expires or you permanently delete it yourself.

If you're using iCloud Photos or Google Photos, your phone also tells the cloud that the photo was deleted. The cloud then updates your other connected devices so your tablet, laptop, and phone all stay synchronized.

What feels like one simple tap can trigger updates across multiple devices in just a few seconds.

Today, we're looking at what actually happens when your phone connects to your car.

It takes just a few seconds, but your phone and vehicle are doing much more than simply connecting.

First, they recognize each other and confirm they've been paired before. Then your phone checks what the vehicle is allowed to access. Can it display your contacts? Play your music? Show your navigation? Read your text messages aloud? Those decisions are based on the permissions you've already given.

Once connected, the conversation doesn't stop. Throughout your drive, your phone is constantly sending updated information to the vehicle. Skip a song, receive a phone call, start navigation, or dictate a text message, and your phone immediately shares that information so the vehicle can display it or respond.

To the driver, it feels automatic. Behind the scenes, two computers are working together every second of the drive.

One thing we've noticed at CyForce over the years is that attorneys often reach out to a digital forensics expert when they have questions about evidence.

The most valuable conversations, however, often happen before there are questions.

Not because anything has gone wrong. Quite the opposite.

Sometimes the most important decision in a matter isn't what to collect. It's what to preserve.

A phone gets upgraded. A vehicle gets repaired or sold. An account is deactivated. A device is reset. None of these things happen because someone is trying to destroy evidence. They're just part of everyday life.

The challenge is that by the time a dispute arises, those ordinary decisions can become very important.

That's one of the biggest misconceptions about digital forensics. People often think it's about recovering information after the fact. Sometimes it is. But just as often, it's about identifying potential sources of evidence early enough to ensure they're still available when needed.

Technology changes quickly. Devices are replaced. Data is overwritten. Systems update automatically.

A short conversation at the beginning of a matter can sometimes make all the difference months later.

Digital forensics isn't always about finding evidence. Sometimes it's about helping ensure the evidence is still there when you need it.
