Most AAC boards have words like teacher, friend, or family.

That is a good start.

But real life is more specific than that.

A communicator may want to talk about:

Mom
Grandma
Ms. Sarah
the bus driver
their sitter
their therapist
their favorite cousin
the person who was kind to them today

Adding real people to the board can make communication feel more personal, useful, and connected to everyday life.

Because “teacher” is helpful.

But “Ms. Sarah” may be the word they actually need.

Some words are too important to be buried.

If a communicator needs to say stop, help, no, bathroom, break, or something hurts, those words should be easy to find when the moment is already hard.

AAC access is not only about having the words somewhere on the board.

It is about whether the communicator can reach them when they actually need them.

Can they find “help” quickly?
Can they say “no” without searching?
Can they tell someone something hurts?
Can they ask for a break before everything gets too much?

SLP tip of the week: add repair words. 🗣️

AAC is not only about helping a communicator say something the first time.

It also needs to help when the message gets misunderstood.

Because real-life communication breaks down all the time:

🍎 Someone hands over the wrong snack
🤷 An adult guesses wrong
⏩ The conversation moves too fast
🔎 The word they need is hard to find

That is where repair words matter.

Try adding words like:

not that
try again
different
wait
I meant
help me find it
you misunderstood

These words give a communicator a way to stay in the conversation instead of starting over, shutting down, or relying on someone else to guess.

The exam room is not the moment to start looking for words. 🩺

Doctor visits can go sideways fast — the paper on the table, cold hands, bright lights, someone asking your child to “open wide.”

That is why an AAC board for doctor visits should be ready before the appointment.

Start with words that help your communicator have some control:

stop ✋
wait
that hurts
help
no
I need a break
all done
go home

Then add feeling words, body clues, and a few body parts so your child has a way to show what is happening.

A medical AAC board does not have to be perfect. It just needs to be useful in the room.

If an AAC board only helps a communicator say “I want,” it is missing a lot of the conversation.

AAC is often introduced through requesting:

More crackers.
I want juice.
Help.

Those words matter. They are real communication. 💜

But AAC is not just for asking for things.

A strong AAC communication board should also help nonspeaking and minimally speaking communicators:

Say no.
Ask questions.
Share feelings.
Tell jokes.
Comment on what is happening.
Join conversations already happening around them.

Because communication is not only about getting something.

For us, it starts with the words that tend to matter most when the day is winding down:

A bedtime routine board does not have to be huge. It just needs to give your communicator a way to say what they need when they are tired, dysregulated, or trying to stretch bedtime by one more book.

AAC at bedtime should feel calm, simple, and useful. Not like a lesson. Not like a quiz.
