Is the US manufacturing downturn bottoming out?

ISM Manufacturing PMI jumped +4.7 points in January, to 52.6, its highest since August 2022.

This marks the first monthly expansion in 12 months.

New orders surged +9.7 points, to 57.1, the highest since February 2022, suggesting more resilience ahead.

Furthermore, the backlog of orders rose +5.8 points, to 51.6, the highest since August 2022.

The employment index increased +3.3 points, to 48.1, the highest since January 2025, but remained in contraction for the 12th consecutive month.

Meanwhile, prices paid increased +0.5 points, to 59.0, significantly below the June peak of 69.7.

The manufacturing sector finally appears to be rebounding.

Hock Tan (CEO) was candid about the state of non-AI semiconductors:

“Demand for non-AI semiconductors remains slow to recover. Q4 year-over-year growth looks to be only low single digits at best. We expect more of a U-shaped recovery — maybe by mid-to-late 2026 we’ll start to see meaningful improvement. But right now, the trajectory is not clear.”

Meanwhile, AI chips are booming, but the rest of the industry is still waiting for its rebound.

The US manufacturing recession is deepening:

The ISM Manufacturing PMI index decreased -1 point in July, to 48.0, the lowest since November 2024.

This marks its 5th consecutive monthly contraction.

As a result, the US manufacturing sector has now shrunk in 31 out of the last 33 months.

The ISM report also showed its 6th-straight monthly contraction in new orders.

Furthermore, the employment index fell -1.6 points, to 43.4, its lowest since 2020.

This comes as 25% of US manufacturers reduced their payrolls last month, the highest share since June 2020.

US manufacturing needs help.
