Small business owners — is your online marketing getting away from you?

Maybe your website needs updating. Maybe you're not showing up on Google the way you should. Or Facebook and your email list have simply been sitting there because you don't have time to deal with them.

That's where I come in.

I'm Pat Wright, owner of Panorama Marketing Group in La Mesa. I work directly with small businesses on websites, Google, email marketing and social media — without the expense or runaround of a big agency.

Tell me what's not working. Let's see if I can help.

AI found your business. Great. Now ask a harder question.

What does AI think you do?

When I tested Panorama Marketing Group, AI didn't simply return our name and address.

It described us as helping local neighborhood businesses with email marketing, social media and local search.

That's important.

Because being found isn't enough if AI has the wrong idea about your company.

Your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, directories and other mentions around the web all help create a picture of your business.

So here's your weekend homework:

Ask an AI tool to recommend a business like yours.

If you appear, read the description carefully.

Is that how you want potential customers to understand your business?

Don't ask AI about your business. Ask AI for your business.

There's a big difference.

If you own Joe's Plumbing, asking:

“Tell me about Joe's Plumbing”

doesn't tell you very much.

Instead, try:

“Who can fix a leaking pipe near me?”

Own a cleaning company?

“Who can clean my office every week?”

Run an accounting firm?

“Good accountant for a small business near me.”

Now you're testing something important:

Does AI consider your business an answer to a customer's problem?

That's the test small businesses should start paying attention to.

Does AI know your business exists?

For years, small businesses have worried about whether they show up on Google.

There's a new test.

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI tool for the kind of business you operate — without using your business name.

I tried:

“Agency to help small businesses in La Mesa.”

Panorama Marketing Group showed up.

That's what you want. AI didn't just know our name. It understood what we do, who we serve and where we do it.

Try it with your own business.

Don't search for yourself.

Search the way a potential customer would search for you.

Did AI find you?

🤖 Is AI Looking at Your LinkedIn Profile?

If you own a small business, here's a question worth asking:

Should you post on your LinkedIn company page or your personal profile first?

As AI becomes better at understanding businesses online, your digital footprint matters more than ever. Your website, Google Business Profile, reviews—and yes, LinkedIn—all help tell your story.

In my latest article, I discuss why I believe your company page should serve as your business's official record, while your personal profile helps build trust and engagement by putting a face behind the brand.

It's not just about getting likes today—it's about building a consistent online presence that customers (and AI) can understand tomorrow.

Do you post more often on your personal profile or your company page? I'd love to hear what has worked for you.

Know Your Audience

One of the first lessons in marketing is surprisingly simple:

Know who you're talking to.

For most businesses, a Fourth of July email means flags, fireworks, hot dogs, and "Happy Independence Day."

Those emails are perfectly fine.

They're also easy to forget.

For The Bee Libertarian, we wanted to create something different—something written specifically for California Libertarians.

Instead of repeating the usual patriotic themes, we asked ourselves what our readers would find meaningful.

The answer wasn't another collection of fireworks.

It was an original essay inspired by Robert A. Heinlein—a writer whose novels explored freedom, individual responsibility, and the relationship between citizens and government.

AI helped us bring that idea to life with a dramatic cover illustration celebrating America's 250th anniversary. But the illustration wasn't the point.

The point was understanding the audience.

A memorable graphic attracts attention.

A story keeps people reading.

And a message tailored to the people receiving it is what makes marketing memorable.

That's why I believe AI is at its best when it supports creativity instead of replacing it. It gives us new ways to express ideas—but it's still our job to know who we're talking to and why those ideas will matter.

Whether I'm creating a newsletter for a nonprofit, a marketing campaign for a local business, or a publication like The Bee Libertarian, the goal is always the same:

Create something your audience will remember because it feels like it was created just for them.

What Does the Wizard of Oz Have to Do With Ferrets?

At first glance...

Absolutely nothing.

But sometimes the best way to explain a complicated issue is through a story everyone already understands.

For LegalizeFerrets.org, we were trying to explain a frustrating legal process involving a California government agency. We could have written another article full of legal terminology, dates, and bureaucratic procedures.

Instead, we asked a different question.

What if the journey felt like Dorothy's trip down the Yellow Brick Road?

Suddenly, readers had something familiar to connect with.

The Emerald City became the long-awaited decision.

The winding road became California bureaucracy.

The characters represented persistence, hope, and the obstacles encountered along the way.

Then AI helped bring that vision to life with an illustration that immediately captured people's attention.

The result wasn't just another email.

It became a story people wanted to read.

That's the power of combining imagination with AI.

The technology didn't replace creativity—it amplified it.

Whether you're promoting a nonprofit, a restaurant, a real estate listing, or a local business, people rarely remember a list of facts.

They remember stories.

If your marketing feels like it's getting lost in a crowded inbox, I'd love to help.

Using AI-assisted design and storytelling, I can transform ordinary emails into memorable experiences that people actually enjoy reading.

Sometimes all it takes is finding your own Yellow Brick Road.

Most marketing emails aren't bad.

They're just...forgettable.

This week I took a perfectly good promotional email and asked a simple question:

What if we made people feel something before asking them to read the details?

The facts stayed exactly the same.

The story changed.

AI helped reorganize the information, improve the visual flow, and create a stronger emotional connection.

That's what excites me about AI.

Not replacing creativity...

Helping us tell better stories.

If you've got an email you'd like me to give the same treatment, I now offer AI Email Makeovers for just $30.
