Wondering what actually happens in a 30-minute Business Cyber Risk Review? No mystery, no audit, and definitely no sales ambush. It’s a conversation.

We start with your business: What would hurt most if it stopped? Which data matters most? What are clients or insurers asking you to have in place?

Then, together, we look at a few practical areas:
• How your accounts are protected
• Whether backups are monitored and restore-tested
• Where your data lives and who can access it
• Whether you have a written plan for a bad day

You’ll leave with a plain-English summary of what’s solid, where the gaps are, and what to fix first: measured in dollars, downtime, reputation, and compliance exposure, not technical jargon.

B&R Computers is a locally owned Kutztown, PA team of business risk advisors, founded in 2017. We’re rated 4.9 out of 5 from 95 Google reviews and meet Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., by appointment.

Your email address can be copied. Your email security shouldn’t be.

An attacker can make a message appear to come from your own company domain. That can lead to fake invoices or payment-change requests being sent to customers and suppliers, and convincing internal-looking messages landing in your team’s inboxes.

Email authentication is easier to understand as three checks:

SPF: a list of approved senders for your domain.

DKIM: a tamper-resistant seal showing the message really came through an authorized system and wasn’t altered.

DMARC: instructions for the internet when a message fails those checks, send it to junk, or reject it.

Set aside five minutes to check whether your domain has these records and what it does when a message fails. Regulated industries and professional firms are increasingly expected to demonstrate controls like these, and they also help protect client trust.

Poll: Could someone send an email that looks like it came from your company domain right now?

Probably not / Probably yes / We tested it / No idea

MFA is still one of the best ways to protect your business, but “I have MFA, so I’m fine” isn’t the whole story.

A modern phishing scam can use a fake sign-in page that sits between you and the real service. It passes your username, password, and one-time code through in real time, then captures the active session. MFA was technically used, but the attacker may still get access.

No blame: these pages can look remarkably convincing. A few practical defenses:

• Never sign in through a link in an unexpected email or text. Go directly to the website, use a bookmark, or open the app.
• Be cautious with any unexpected login page, even if it looks familiar.
• Use phishing-resistant MFA, such as security keys or passkeys, for your highest-risk accounts.
• After a suspicious login, check with IT for unusual sign-in alerts and unexpected inbox rules.

Which accounts would hurt most if someone got in today? (a) email and file sharing, (b) accounting and payroll, (c) client or patient records, (d) all of the above.

As your locally owned Kutztown, PA business risk advisors, we help owners focus on what matters: dollars, downtime, reputation, and compliance exposure.

A calendar invite can look harmless, and still lead to dollars lost, downtime, reputation damage, or compliance exposure.

Two phishing formats busy people often click without thinking:

• An unexpected meeting invite with no context, a vague or misspelled title, a “join here” link, or a request to sign in to view the agenda.

• A fake voicemail notification saying “you have a new voicemail” with a link to listen. That link may lead to a spoofed sign-in page or a dangerous download.

Simple rules:
✅ Don’t click a meeting link you weren’t expecting.
✅ Verify the organizer through a channel you already trust.
✅ Treat voicemail notification links with suspicion, especially when the sender’s address doesn’t match your actual phone system.

Have you ever received an unexpected calendar invite with a login link? Yes / No / I don't open anything anymore.

A text from “the owner” asking for gift cards or an urgent wire transfer? Before anyone reaches for a credit card, pause. The urgency is doing the heavy lifting.

EXAMPLE, fictional message from a generic, nonexistent sender:
“Hi, it’s the owner. I’m in a meeting and need you to buy six gift cards right away. Please send me the numbers as soon as you have them. I can’t talk right now.”

Red flags:
• An unexpected payment request by text
• “I’m in a meeting” used to avoid a call
• Pressure to act immediately
• A request to bypass normal approval procedures

The single best rule: Verify any payment or credential request through a second, known channel, a phone number you already have, not the one in the message.

Front desk teams in healthcare and professional services are often trusted to move quickly. That’s exactly why a quick verification step matters.

Would your team have questioned this request? Yes / No / Depends who it came from.

Day 16 of 31 Days to a Safer Business: your out-of-office reply may be sharing more than you think.

A made-up reply like “I’m away until the 14th, contact Dana for anything urgent” quietly tells an attacker:

• Who’s away
• Who’s covering
• How long the gap lasts
• Sometimes, which suppliers or approval processes are involved

That’s exactly the kind of detail a convincing fake request needs.

Keep your reply useful but vague: say you’re away from email, provide your return date, and direct people to the main office line or a shared, monitored mailbox. Avoid naming the person covering, listing approval authority, or mentioning supplier names.

For extra protection, add: “For anything payment related, please call the office.”

The same logic applies to your out-of-office status in chat tools and calendar blocks. Your availability settings can tell a story, too.

What does your out-of-office reply give away right now? Reply with how specific yours is, or read it out loud and decide.

One day offline is rarely “just an IT problem.”

Payroll doesn’t pause. Orders stack up. Invoices stay in drafts. Staff wait. Customers notice. And while the dollar cost adds up, so can the reputation and compliance exposure.

Most owners can estimate what a busy day is worth. Fewer have actually quantified what happens when the systems that keep that day moving go offline.

That’s where B&R Computers is different. We don’t sell technology. We reduce the risk that comes from depending on it. We help identify the risk, quantify the impact, put practical protections in place, and monitor what changes.

We’re a locally owned Kutztown, PA team of business risk advisors, not a break/fix shop waiting for something to go wrong.

Do you actually know what one day of downtime costs your business, or would you be guessing?

The most dangerous invoice scam may arrive in the email thread you already trust.

A supplier’s mailbox is compromised, or quietly monitored. The attacker replies inside a real conversation about an order or project, then asks for the next payment to go to a different account. Same thread. Familiar history. Very expensive mistake.

MADE-UP TRAINING EXAMPLE, NOT A REAL EMAIL, PERSON, OR COMPANY
From: A vendor contact your team already works with
Subject: Re: Recent equipment order
“Hi, sorry for the inconvenience. Our banking system changed, so please send the next payment to the updated account. Could you confirm once it’s set up? We’d appreciate processing today’s payment before the cut-off.”

Red flags include the change in banking details, a slightly altered reply-to address, pressure to process today’s payment, and any request to bypass the usual approval path.

The fix: verify every payment-detail change by calling the vendor using a number already in your records, not a number in the email. Require dual approval for payment changes.

At B&R Computers, your locally owned Kutztown, PA business risk advisors, we help reduce exposure to fraud, downtime, reputation damage, and compliance headaches.

Could you spot the giveaway in this fake invoice email before reading the answer?

EXAMPLE, FAKE EMAIL (not a real message):

“From: Billing Team
Subject: Urgent: Please confirm these charges

Hello Customer,

Please confirm these charges by 3:00 PM today. Your invoice is attached as a PDF.

Review invoice: https://invoice-review-secure.example

Thank you,
Accounts Receivable”

What’s wrong?
• Mismatched sender domain: The address doesn’t match the vendor’s usual domain.
• Urgency: A same-day deadline is pressure, not proof.
• Unexpected attachment: You weren’t expecting an invoice or PDF.
• Generic greeting: “Hello Customer” avoids using your name or company.
• Mismatched link: The link doesn’t match the vendor’s website.

The biggest giveaway? Don’t rely on just one detail. Several small inconsistencies together are a strong warning to stop and verify through a trusted channel, not by replying to the email.

Poll: Could you spot it? Yes / Probably not / My team would have clicked.

A bad click is a moment. What happens next is what matters.

Here’s the plain-English playbook for the first 60 minutes:

1. If the screen starts behaving strangely, disconnect from the network.
2. Don’t enter or re-enter any passwords.
3. Don’t delete the email, and don’t turn off the computer.
4. Tell IT immediately what you clicked and when.
5. Be honest about anything you typed. No blame, just useful facts.
6. Let IT reset your password, sign you out of all sessions, and check for sneaky inbox rules.

Speed and honesty shrink the cost. The expensive part isn’t usually the click. It’s when someone hides the mistake and valuable time disappears.

If someone at your business clicked a bad link at 9:15 AM tomorrow, does your team know exactly who to tell in the first 10 minutes?

Yes / They’d ask around / Everyone would figure it out / No idea
