“Self-learning” is getting a lot of attention in plant automation. For Fastweigh customers, it has been part of asphalt silo loadout since we released the module in 2024.

Fastweigh uses previous drop results to refine when the gate should begin closing, accounting for material that continues falling after the close command. Our newer optional Pulse Mode adds finer control by using recent product-specific history to calculate short gate-open times near the end of a load.

It is practical, history-based control built into the same workflow that connects the truck, order, target weight, loadout, and final ticket.

At a waste or recycling facility, weighing the truck is only part of the job. Scale operators need to know who brought the load, what material is coming in, whether the site can accept it, what it weighs, what to charge, and where to send the driver next. Commercial haulers and public customers can all be moving through the same entrance, so these decisions have to happen at a rapid pace under pressure.

For repeat traffic, Fastweigh can recognize a truck instantly with license plate recognition, RFID, or an ID card, pulling up the right ticketing info every time. Drivers can check in at unattended kiosks in just a few taps while Fastweigh connects with scales, printers, cameras, and traffic controls. Once a truck leaves, the ticket is already available in the back office for inventory tracking, reporting, billing, and more.

That takes a surprising amount of routine work off the scale operator’s desk while keeping them in control.

Anyone who works around asphalt loadout knows that getting close to the target weight is one thing. Consistently landing that final small drop can be the difficult part.

Fastweigh’s asphalt silo loadout tools keep the order, truck information, target weight, loadout controls, and ticketing within the same process. Our new small-drop Pulse Mode can also use recent drop history to estimate flow rate and pulse the gate more precisely when only a small amount of material is left to load.

That gives operators less guesswork near the end of the load while keeping trucks and tickets moving through the plant.

We enjoyed joining asphalt industry leaders in Columbus for the 2026 National Asphalt Pavement Association Midyear Meeting. Technology adoption was a major part of the conversation, with plenty of thoughtful discussion about how producers are introducing new tools into their operations and preparing their teams for continued change.

For Fastweigh, those conversations are always valuable. Understanding how technology is actually being evaluated and used in the field helps us stay focused on building practical solutions for the people running asphalt operations every day.

One of the highlights was spending some quality time with our customer Bituminous Roadways, Inc. We appreciate their partnership and were glad to have the opportunity to catch up in person.

Holden Jones had a great couple of days representing Fastweigh at the Colorado Stone, Sand & Gravel Association Summer Conference & Golf Outing in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The event kicked off with a reception, dinner, plenty of familiar faces, and a very fitting “Rock Race,” where everyone chose a rock and competed to see whose was fastest.

Day two brought the golf tournament, another dinner, and more time with Colorado’s aggregates community, all against a pretty incredible mountain backdrop. Thanks to the Colorado Stone, Sand & Gravel Association for putting together such a fun event. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

Monday morning at a busy plant does not leave much room for detective work. Before the first truck rolls across the scale, a quick opening checklist can prevent hours of cleanup later:

☝ Are today’s orders active and assigned to the right locations?

☝ Are products, pricing, and customer details current?

☝ Are scales, printers, cameras, and traffic controls responding?

☝ Can dispatch, the scale house, and loadout see the same information?

☝ If connectivity drops, can ticketing keep moving?

☝ Does your ticketing software cover all of the above natively?

The fewer separate systems, workarounds, and manual handoffs your team has to manage, the easier it is to keep information accurate and trucks moving. A smooth morning starts with a team that knows what is coming before the yard gets busy.
