A beautiful room can still get ruined at the wall.

When every lighting layer gets its own switch, the result is often visual clutter and more decisions for the homeowner.

Issue 014 of The Level Up Journal is about controlling the room instead of every individual circuit - and designing the wall with the same intention as the rest of the space.

A closer look at our recent Sonos case study project. 🎶

Inside this Westford, MA home, 26 pairs of in-ceiling speakers deliver great sound in every room, with no speakers in sight. That’s 30 audio zones across three floors, all blending right into the design.

The power behind it? Two Sonos Amp Multis doing the work of eight standard Amps. Add Josh.ai voice control and the whole house responds to a simple request.

More recessed lights doesn’t automatically mean better lighting.

A good lighting plan is about layers, focus, contrast, and putting light where it actually matters — not just filling the ceiling with fixtures.

Issue 012 of The Level Up Journal is about why fewer, better-planned lights can create a much better room.

Two speakers on the back of the house? That’s not an outdoor audio system.

If the patio is loud and the pool is quiet, the problem isn’t volume. It’s design.

The better approach is to treat the backyard like a series of rooms without walls and design the technology around where people actually sit, swim, cook and hang out.

In Issue 011 of The Level Up Journal, I break down the full framework: outdoor audio, TV placement, landscape lighting, Wi-Fi and when all of it should be planned.

If you’re building a pool, patio, outdoor kitchen or backyard, read this before the landscaping is done:

Your camera caught it. Great. Now what?

Cameras are incredibly useful. They can show you who’s at the door, what pulled into the driveway, and what happened while you were away.

But seeing something happen is only one part of security.

A good security strategy also thinks about detection, lighting, locks and access, notifications, recording, and the network underneath all of it.

The goal isn’t more cameras.

It’s better awareness — and knowing what should happen next.

A Camera Is Not a Security Strategy

If your smart home keeps you guessing, we did too much.

Why did the lights change? Why are the shades moving? Why did that room turn off while someone is still sitting in it?

Automation should take small, predictable decisions off your plate. It should not make you investigate what your house is thinking.

Issue 009 of The Level Up Journal is about knowing what to automate - and when to leave the homeowner in control.

Nothing in this room is competing for attention, and that’s exactly the point.

This custom AV installation by our Maryland team features flush in-ceiling speakers with custom-painted grills, paired with quiet, zoned lighting.

You feel the calm before you notice the tech. That’s not an accident, that’s design.

We obsess over tiny architectural lights... then cut dinner plates into the ceiling for speakers.

That tradeoff is increasingly unnecessary.

Across the architectural-audio industry, small-aperture speakers can now coordinate with the scale and geometry of modern lighting, while invisible speakers can eliminate the conventional grille entirely.

Issue 008 of The Level Up Journal is about selecting audio around the architecture - not forcing every room into the same visual solution.

Wi-Fi extenders are usually the solution to a problem you shouldn’t have had in the first place.

Extenders, pods and mesh systems can absolutely have a place. But in a sophisticated home, coverage products should not be asked to replace network design.

Issue 007 of The Level Up Journal looks at the infrastructure behind reliable Wi-Fi: dedicated network components, intentional access-point placement, wired backhaul and planning before the walls close.

Your house shouldn’t be surprised by the sun.

Glare at the same time every afternoon. Heat building on the same exposure. Privacy changing after dark. These are predictable conditions.

Thoughtful motorized shading can respond before they become your problem - without unnecessarily giving up the view.

Issue 006 of The Level Up Journal is live: The Sun Moves. Your Home Should Respond.

Fun fact: automated shades are one of our favorite automated solutions.

Why? Because the best upgrades are the ones that disappear into the background.

You can spend six figures on a kitchen and make it look cheap with bad lighting.

We obsess over stone, wood, hardware, paint and furniture - then experience every one of those choices through light.

Issue 005 of The Level Up Journal is about treating light as a design material, not just filling a ceiling with fixtures.
