I've been saying this for years... and not just about their printers! Here's someone who knows what he's talking about--he repairs laptops and PCs like I do and I respect his opinion. So now you don't have to just take it from me. Bottom line: Don't Buy HP... anything!

How do hackers hack passwords?

When hackers are trying to get passwords, they don’t guess them one by one in a password field. Instead, they have a toolbox of software programs and databases to help them figure out credentials that might work.

First, most passwords that hackers have access to are stolen in large data breaches from popular online services. When popular services like LinkedIn, eBay, and Adobe have millions of records leaked, the passwords stolen in those breaches are compiled in large databases. Less well-known websites are also regularly hacked due to poor security protocols. So, what do hackers do? They use these “dumps” of data to perform “credential stuffing”, where they use software (or “bots”) to automatically test every username and password combination in the database to see if any successfully log on to another website (like a bank).

To learn more and help prevent hackers from getting into your online accounts, go here:

A hackers goal is to gain access to your information. Whether through password spraying or malware, the damage a hacker could inflict is also preventable. Using a password manager and not reusing passwords are a few ways to prevent online identity theft.

In case anyone has experienced this yesterday. Apparently it is "fixed". I certainly hope so! Got a lot of calls yesterday--my phone started to melt!!

An issue with Malwarebytes has many thinking that Google is down, but rather the site is being blocked by the antivirus program.

Use extreme caution with FaceBook emails!

We take a look at a Facebook phish which tries to pressure potential victims into responding to mails that they really shouldn't.

Will this never end.....

More than 500 million Facebook users' email addresses, phone numbers and birthdates were stolen in a breach. Here's how to find out if your data is included.

The picture below is a screen shot of an email I got the other day. I use Google Photos, so it caught my eye. Luckily, I noticed the sender address (underlined in yellow) before I clicked on anything or loaded images. This is obviously a phishing attempt. The red flags here are--as already mentioned--the sender address (NOT from Google) and the poor grammar in the subject.

These kinds of scam emails are becoming rampant. Not only pretending to be from Google, but also Amazon, UPS, Comcast, etc. No matter what email provider or email software you use, there are a few important things to remember. One is: NEVER allow pictures/graphics to automatically load with incoming emails. If it is a spammer email, this tells the spammer that your email address is "real"--as opposed to the millions of fake ones they generate with their spamming software. Your address then gets put on a list and sent to other spammers/hackers. You then get more bad emails. Another thing is to NEVER click on links or images inside emails--that is, unless you are absolutely sure who the sender is and you are expecting the message. Even if the email is from a friend, their account could have been hacked and are now sending bad emails to all their contacts--including you!

Email is the #1 method of spreading malware around the internet. We must all use utmost caution when responding to messages. Let me know if anyone has a question about this subject or as anything to add.

Happy computing, everyone!

Hello everyone! Sorry I have not posted in a while. The last 3 months have been rather difficult, health-wise and now with all this snowy weather. Don't worry, I'm fine. No COVID, but I did have a touch of walking pneumonia followed by an injury to my back. Both of these required trips to the ER and lots of bed rest. Despite that I have been able to take care of some business that has kept me going. I am much better now and just wanted to let everyone know I am still here and available to help out with your computer problems!

My next post will concern something I have been seeing a lot of lately. Specifically, SCAMS. Both over the phone and through email. Stay tuned.

Have a great week, everyone!

ALERT! For those of you using the Google Chrome browser--if you see a notification saying: "Managed By Your Organization" when you click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the screen, you have a search hijacker installed! You should read the article below, then contact me for removal instructions. It's not a destructive hijack, but it should be removed and it isn't hard to do so. I have started seeing this on my clients PC lately. Any questions, just ask!

Search hijackers are always looking for ways to get and stay installed. Here is one that changed a Chrome policy and set it to remote administration.

Bad news for anyone interested in the Dell 17R N7110: it is no longer available! I have replaced it with a Dell Latitude E6520, 15.4-inch display. As with the others, it has the latest Windows 10 Pro version, plus 8GB of memory and a 240GB Solid State drive. The outside shows a bit of wear, but it is a solid functioning unit. If you don't care about aesthetics, it will serve well. Date of manufacture is 1/17/2013. Asking $120.00

Just posted this offer on Nextdoor.com. I have 3 good, solid laptops that need a new home! All are on Windows 10 (version 1909), have 8 gigabytes of memory and all have solid state (FAST) hard drives. Two are Dell Inspirons (17R N7110 and 17R 5737 - 5-8 years old with 17-inch displays). The other is a Lenovo ThinkPad (42763LU) with a 15.4-inch display. The Lenovo is a beast that originally sold for 1500.00+. It also comes with an optional dock and a high-fidelity speaker set. I'm asking 150.00 for the Dells and 250.00 for the Lenovo, but prices are "flexible", (especially on the Lenovo). Any questions, just ask!
