Taking a closer look at Spot Colors
Spot colors are pre-mixed inks used in printing to achieve precise and consistent color results. Instead of blending multiple inks like process color printing (CMYK), spot colors are printed using a single, dedicated ink.
This is especially helpful for things like brand logos and specific corporate colors, where consistency is important across every print run.
Using spot colors can also allow for specialty inks, such as metallic or fluorescent colors, that can’t be created with standard CMYK printing.
Here are some tips;
1. Use Spot Colors for Brand Accuracy
If your logo or brand has a specific color, using a spot color (Pantone) ensures it prints consistently every time.
2. Spot Colors Are Great for Simple Designs
Designs with 1–3 colors are perfect for spot color printing and often print cleaner than full CMYK builds.
3. Avoid Converting Spot Colors to CMYK
If a design is meant to use spot colors, converting it to CMYK can change how the color looks.
4. Name Spot Colors Correctly
In design software, make sure the color is labeled correctly (ex: Pantone 186 C) so the printer knows it’s a spot color.
5. Spot Colors Print Solid
Unlike CMYK which uses tiny dots, spot colors print as solid ink, which can make logos and graphics look sharper.
6. Check Your File Before Sending
Make sure the spot colors are set as spot colors in the file, not just visually similar colors.
7. Spot Colors Work Well for Specialty Inks
Metallics, fluorescents, and specialty colors are usually printed as spot colors.
