Building was the fun part.

Day 74 of 100.

Give me a problem with the product and Iā€™ll happily spend hours trying to solve it.

Sales?

Thatā€™s been a different story. šŸ˜‚

And Iā€™m realizing Iā€™ve made it harder by thinking I needed to figure everything out myself.

I donā€™t.

There are people around me whoā€™ve already made mistakes I havenā€™t made yet.

People who are better at things Iā€™m still learning.

Why wouldnā€™t I ask questions?

Why wouldnā€™t I learn from them?

Being the person building the company doesnā€™t mean I need to know how to do every part of it.

Sometimes I just need to be able to say:

I donā€™t know how to do this yet.

And then find someone who does.

Some real estate agents might disagree with this:

Great service doesnā€™t mean answering every call yourself.

You might be at a showing.

Walking a property.

Negotiating an offer.

Or simply giving the client in front of you your full attention.

That shouldnā€™t mean the next potential client gets ignored.

I think Iā€™ve been trying to sell the wrong way.

Day 73 of 100.

For a while, most of my sales efforts have happened behind a screen.

Cold calls.

Emails.

Follow-ups.

Building lists.

And Iā€™m realizing that maybe Iā€™ve been trying to force myself into a way of selling that doesnā€™t really fit me.

So Iā€™m trying something different.

Iā€™ve got a list of local businesses. Iā€™m building demos specifically for them, and then Iā€™m going to walk in and actually talk to people face to face.

No mass pitch.

No generic demo.

Just a conversation about their business, where theyā€™re getting stuck, and whether what Iā€™ve built can actually help.

Talking to people is something Iā€™m comfortable with.

Maybe I donā€™t need to become someone elseā€™s version of a salesperson. Maybe I just need to sell like myself.

Yesterday was about figuring out how to sell.

Today, Iā€™m trying it my way.

And right now, thatā€™s probably the biggest hurdle Iā€™m facing.

Building is the part I enjoy.

Testing things. Fixing things. Making the system better.

Sales is different.

Following up with prospects.

Tweaking the process.

Learning what moves someone from interested to actually ready to move forward.

It doesnā€™t come as naturally to me as building does. šŸ˜‚

But Iā€™m realizing that building something people want and knowing how to sell it are two completely different skills.

You need both.

Right now, Iā€™m learning the second one.

The water turned black.

Day 71 of 100.

Things here in Kihei are pretty rough right now.

Roads washed out.

Beaches torn up.

Debris everywhere.

Some homes were hit hard, and itā€™s still raining.

I went to check on some of the sailboats, and thankfully, they looked like they made it throughā€”including my buddyā€™s boat we helped secure earlier this year.

But not everyone was as lucky.

Thereā€™s a lot to clean up, and some people are dealing with much more than that.

Thinking about everyone affected and hoping people stay safe as the cleanup begins.
