Looks like verizon services are starting to come back. May be spotty and hit or miss for a while. Also looks like ATT was a very limited outtage near hurricane affected areas. Stay safe out there! Crazy how much not having cell service can throw you off...

09/30/2024

If your cell phone is not working, it is likely not your phone. Verizon has announced an outtage affecting a large number of customers and ATT also has an outtage at this time, just not as wide spread. No eta for either company.

Protect Yourself from Facebook Impersonators: Safeguarding Your Digital Identity

In today's interconnected world, social media platforms like Facebook have become an integral part of our lives. While they offer numerous benefits, it's important to remain vigilant and protect ourselves from potential threats. One such menace is the rise of impersonators on Facebook. In this article, we will shed light on how these impersonators acquire your information and what they do with it. Additionally, we will provide you with practical steps to prevent and stop impersonators from exploiting your online presence.

Understanding the Tactics of Impersonators:
Impersonators on Facebook employ various methods to gather personal information and exploit it for their own gain. Here are a few common tactics:

Phishing Attacks: Impersonators often use deceptive techniques such as phishing emails or messages to trick users into revealing their login credentials or other personal details. They might create fake login pages or masquerade as a trusted entity to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Social Engineering: Some impersonators exploit human vulnerabilities by manipulating individuals through psychological tactics. They might impersonate a person of authority, like a friend or family member, and request sensitive information or financial assistance.

Data Breaches: When large-scale data breaches occur, hackers gain access to vast amounts of personal information, including email addresses, passwords, and other identifying details. Impersonators can then use this stolen information to create convincing profiles and deceive others.

What Impersonators Do with Your Information:
Once impersonators obtain your personal information, they can engage in various malicious activities, including:

Financial Fraud: Impersonators may attempt to access your bank accounts, credit cards, or other financial assets. They might also use your information to make fraudulent purchases or apply for loans in your name, leading to significant financial loss.

Identity Theft: With your personal details, impersonators can assume your identity and create fake profiles to scam your friends, family, or colleagues. They may engage in illegal activities, tarnishing your reputation and causing harm to your personal and professional life.

Social Engineering Attacks: Impersonators often target your contacts by leveraging the trust they have in you. They may send messages or requests for money, manipulate relationships, or spread false information, causing distress and confusion among your social circles.

Protecting Yourself from Impersonators:
While the threat of impersonators on Facebook is real, you can take proactive steps to safeguard your digital identity. Here are a few essential measures:

Strengthen Your Passwords: Use strong, unique passwords for your Facebook account and other online platforms. Avoid using easily guessable information like your name, birthdate, or common phrases. Enable two-factor authentication for an added layer of security.

Be Wary of Suspicious Links and Requests: Exercise caution when clicking on links or downloading attachments, especially from unknown sources. Verify the authenticity of requests for personal information, even if they appear to come from trusted sources.

Regularly Review Privacy Settings: Keep your Facebook privacy settings up to date and restrict access to your personal information. Only share posts with individuals or groups you trust, and avoid divulging sensitive details publicly.

Report Impersonators: If you come across a profile impersonating you or someone else, report it to Facebook immediately. Provide as much information as possible, including screenshots, to help Facebook take appropriate action.

Educate Yourself and Others: Stay informed about the latest cybersecurity threats and educate your friends and family about the risks of impersonation. Encourage them to adopt best practices for online safety.

Conclusion:
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, protecting our online identities is paramount. Facebook impersonators pose a significant threat, but by understanding their tactics, recognizing the signs, and implementing preventive measures, you can fortify your defenses and stay one step ahead. Safeguarding your digital identity is not just about protecting yourself but also about ensuring the trust and security of your online community. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and together, we can create a safer online environment for everyone.

Your antivirus is arguably more important now than it has ever been. Do you have antivirus? Do you use Kaspersky? I have used it before. It has always been one of the top performing antivirus softwares on the market. But did you know they are a Russian owned company? Given the current global environment and the power Russia has over its citizens it may be time to change your computer’s protection. And if you are not running anything I think it is time to consider getting some antivirus. If you need help finding antivirus that will not overload your computer and slow it down to a crawl, call me 270-681-0335.

For more information on Kaspersky here is an article I found interesting:
US says Kaspersky poses unacceptable risk to national security https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/us-says-kaspersky-poses-unacceptable-risk-to-national-security/?fbclid=IwAR3AS1FiGx1cEatlmR8jK-wZVEeRXWD7xHTWVuWfqUoQPTtJcV0WPDLIQtk

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky to its Covered List, saying it poses unacceptable risks to U.S. national security.
