A new scam called Phantom Deal starts with a WhatsApp message from someone who looks like a real company executive. There is no malware or hacked email account involved. The scammers just use real names, photos, company history and a convincing fake NDA to make employees believe a secret acquisition is happening.

In one case, an employee at Gen Digital noticed the caller's voice did not match the person they claimed to be, and reported it before any money moved. Other targets received nearly identical fake NDAs, meaning this is a reusable scam kit being used on multiple companies.

A new study from security firm Echo looked at nearly 40,000 vulnerability life cycles across 250 open source projects. It found that AI tools are discovering security flaws in software at a much faster pace than ever before, with monthly vulnerability disclosures up 145% in just two years. AI can also help build a working exploit for a known flaw in under a day for less than $2,000.

Here's the good news: many of these AI-flagged issues turn out to be less serious than first reported once someone actually checks them. The bigger problem for most organizations isn't finding vulnerabilities, it's getting available fixes installed. Echo found that 89% of the vulnerabilities it studied already had a fix, but nearly 40% sat unresolved for over six months because updating software takes testing and time that IT teams don't always have.

A popular WordPress plugin called All-in-One WP Migration and Backup has a serious security flaw. It has over 5 million active installations, and researchers say attackers can sneak in malicious data that activates when an admin restores a backup, a routine task for anyone using this plugin. Once triggered, it can hand over full control of the website.

This matters because backup and restore is exactly what this plugin is built for, so the exploit is designed around normal, everyday use. The vendor released a fix on August 20, but only about 35% of users have updated so far, leaving roughly 3.25 million sites still exposed.

Microsoft has uncovered an active campaign using fake software-download websites that look almost identical to real vendor pages. So far it has hit healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, government, and education organizations.
