Do you need a CDL for a 3-car hauler? It depends β€” and a lot of operators guess wrong.
CDL rules aren't based on how many cars you haul. They're based on weight ratings. Add your truck's GVWR and your trailer's GVWR. Hit 26,001 lbs or more? You need a CDL.
Many "no CDL needed" setups quietly cross that line once paired with a real truck and real loads.

Fuel isn't a background cost in auto transport. It's 25% of your entire cost structure β€” and right now it's at its highest weekly average since May 2022.

The cheapest bid isn't always the cheapest outcome.
A $400 bid from an uninsured carrier can turn into a $15,000 loss when a vehicle is damaged and there's no coverage to respond.
Bidding is useful β€” but it's only one piece. Here's what actually matters when choosing a car shipping platform. πŸ‘‡

Owner-operator car haulers can gross $150K–$300K a year. But after expenses? Most take home $60K–$150K.
The gap comes down to lanes, equipment, load selection, and how well you control costs β€” not just how many cars you move.
Here's the full 2026 breakdown by setup: hotshot, 2-3 car, and semi. πŸ‘‡

FreightWaves covered our latest Fuel and Transport Cost Tracker update this week, and a few numbers stand out:
β†’ National diesel sits around $5.35/gal β€” more than $1.80 above this time last year
β†’ Auto transport costs are up 16.7% from pre-conflict levels
β†’ But while diesel is up 37–46%, load prices have plateaued at an 11% increase
The gap is the story. Carriers are absorbing the bulk of the fuel hit. Shippers are seeing rates climb, but not at the pace pump prices are climbing. That's margin compression on both sides.
Our CEO Matt Bradley put it plainly in the interview: "It's our goal to make sure the industry transparently knows what's going on. The data is the data."
Check out the full FreightWaves piece. Tracker is also free to use with regular updates based on real accepted offers from the platform.

Super Dispatch has released new data from its Fuel and Transport Cost Tracker detailing the impact of rising diesel prices on carriers, brokers and shippers.

Not all auto transport platforms are built the same β€” and when your volume grows, the gaps become expensive.
This buyer's guide cuts through the noise: what features actually matter, what questions to ask before you commit, and why the platform you choose now will either support your growth or create new bottlenecks down the road.
If you're evaluating options or just wondering if your current setup can scale with you β€” this is worth a read:

Diesel hit $5.40/gallon last week. For a lot of car haulers, fuel just became the #1 expense β€” passing insurance, passing payroll, passing everything.
Commercial Carrier Journal covered how the industry is responding, and SuperCard got a mention worth sharing:
One carrier filled up 115 gallons with a 75Β’/gallon discount through SuperCard. Total savings on a single stop: $83.
Do that twice a week and you're looking at real money back in the truck β€” not the pump.

With diesel hitting $5.15 per gallon, fleet tech providers like WEX, Super Dispatch and Relay Payments are offering fuel discounts and data-driven controls to save carriers hundreds at the pump.

Fuel is one of your biggest variable costs. When diesel moves, your margin moves.

You can’t control prices. You can control how you run your trucks.

Strong carriers focus on:

1) Revenue per mileβ€”not just rate per load

2) Smarter routing and fewer empty miles

3) Trip-level profitability

4) Reducing idle and waste

Small leaks add up fast in this business. If fuel is cutting into your CPM, this is a practical read.

You don’t need a 9-car rig to get started. Many carriers begin with a dually and 3–5 car trailer β€” but profit comes down to planning, not just equipment.

In this guide, we cover:

β€’ What a dually setup can realistically handle
β€’ Real startup costs (insurance, authority, equipment)
β€’ How to find your first loads
β€’ When it makes sense to scale

If you’re serious about building a profitable operation, this is where to start.
