UNDERSTANDING YOUR CISO – CISO PERSPECTIVES FOR 2025

Portnox has recently produced a report on the concerns of CISO’s as the costs of cyber liability increase and the failure of some parts of the tech stack.

According to surveyed CISOs, Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), once seen as a transformative approach to cybersecurity, has not fully met expectations. All respondents shared dissatisfaction, noting that Zero Trust doesn’t perform as effectively in practice as anticipated.

The survey also highlights that cyber liability insurance is a major concern, with many CISOs uncertain if their current policies sufficiently address the fast-changing landscape of cybersecurity risks.

Perhaps most notably, the Portnox survey reveals a deep sense of vulnerability among CISOs regarding job security; nearly every CISO surveyed (99%) expressed concern about the risk of job loss in the event of a security breach.

KNOWING WHO’S WHO IN YOUR BUSINESS IS THE KEY….

Cyber Insurance is just getting more and more expensive. In a recent survey, cyber security leaders identified identify management as one of the top concerns and a way to potentially mitigate insurance costs.

The 2024-2025 Horizons of Identity Security report, drawing from data provided by 350 global cybersecurity leaders, emphasizes that robust identity security practices yield significant returns on investment by lowering cyber risk, enhancing productivity, and creating business value.

A key concern identified in the report is the impact of identity security on the rising costs of cyber insurance. The survey revealed that 92% of respondents indicated that insurers are now thoroughly evaluating cyber capabilities, including identity security, when determining premiums.

Additionally, the report found that over 70% of decision-makers in identity security consider it one of the top three most influential factors affecting insurance premiums.

HELP SECURE YOUR ENVIRONMENT, START WITH EFFECTIVE PASSWORD MANAGEMENT

Despite significant investments in security, banks continue to face fundamental challenges, including the use of default passwords, vulnerabilities from third-party vendors, and susceptibility to social engineering attacks. According to a Neovera report released Wednesday, which surveyed 350 regional and community banks, an alarming 26% of banks still rely on blank or default passwords, leaving systems vulnerable to unauthorized access. Additionally, managing multiple vendors and integrating diverse systems can create operational inefficiencies that complicate password enforcement.

Effective password management doesn’t have to be complex—The Tech Collective can guide you in finding the right solution tailored to your environment. Let’s start the conversation.

YOUR CYBER SECURITY TEAMS ARE UNDER PRESSURE, MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE TOOLS TO DEAL WITH IT.

Dealing with the aftermath of an incident can be exhausting to cyber security teams, and the heavy pressure on those involved can take a significant toll. Stress in the cybersecurity sector, especially following an incident, is a well-known challenge that many professionals face in silence.

One of the toughest challenges of post-incident stress is the burden of accountability. When a cyberattack occurs, the cybersecurity team is thrust into the spotlight. Burnout among these professionals is an increasing concern, with the intense post-incident response periods often serving as the breaking point.

Acknowledging the stress cybersecurity experts endure is the first step toward reducing its impact. In such a high-pressure field, building resilience is essential. Cybersecurity professionals must cultivate not only their technical expertise but also their emotional and mental fortitude to manage the demands of the role.

2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (2FA) HELPS YOU STAY YOU IN THE ONLINE WORLD

If you’ve ever been a victim of losing control of one of your on-line social media accounts, it equates to being locked out of your own personal world. As social engineering attacks continue to increase, loss of access to a social media account becomes more likely.

The U.K.'s Action Fraud team, managed by law enforcement, has issued a warning to users of email and social media platforms about a growing threat that has resulted in over 33,000 victims losing more than $1.8 million due to account hacks. Here’s what you need to know and steps you should take immediately to protect your Gmail, Outlook, LinkedIn, Facebook, and X accounts.

ZERO TRUST + HEALTHCARE = A MORE SECURE ENVIRONMENT

Healthcare remains a prime target for cybersecurity attacks, yet many organizations still depend on outdated software and patchwork access management policies. By relying on obsolete tools to address modern challenges, these organizations expose themselves to unnecessary risks, making it easier for attackers to gain access whenever they choose.

Implementing a zero-trust strategy enables organizations to establish strict policies governing what users, devices, or applications can access, requiring authentication for every session. Zero-trust network access (ZTNA) extends this approach across the entire enterprise network for enhanced security.

The Tech Collective are experts in Zero Trust Solutions. If you're organization is looking at implementing Zero Trust, let us know. We bring a wealth of options and knowledge to help secure your environment.

STOP THE SECURITY BRAIN DRAIN...

The findings from BlackFog eBooks and Reports show that nearly a quarter (24%) of security leaders are actively seeking new jobs, while more than half (54%) aren’t ready to quit but are open to new opportunities. Stress and high demands are the primary reasons security professionals are considering leaving, with 93% citing these factors as their main motivation. Additionally, 15% of security experts are working over 16 extra hours per week to combat the relentless threat of ransomware and malware attacks.

Leadership needs to understand the stress their security team is under and take steps with those teams to help lower the stress to ensure key personnel stay engaged for the long term.

WHAT'S THE PRICE OF COMPLACENCY?

We see the same pattern time and again: it’s only after disaster hits that we rush to address the issues we’ve long neglected. This reactive approach highlights our reluctance to act on foresight and prepare in advance.

The PwC 2025 Global Digital Trust Insights survey emphasizes the urgent need for stronger corporate cybersecurity strategies in response to an increasingly complex threat environment. Despite widespread awareness of cyber risks, only 2% of companies have fully implemented comprehensive cyber resilience measures across their entire organization, revealing a significant gap between intention and action.

In the details of the report, PWC highlights several areas organizations can improve to address complacency:

• Misalignment in Measuring Cyber Risks
• Addressing the Expanding Attack Surface
• Leveraging Generative AI for Cyber Defense
• Regulatory Compliance and the Confidence Gap
• Investing in Resilience and Building Trust
• Elevating the Role of the CISO
• A Call for Comprehensive Cyber Strategy and Leadership

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CAN'T GET WATER?

American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., is recovering from a cyberattack that disrupted billing services for its 14 million customers. This incident follows a March warning from the White House and EPA, urging U.S. governors to address the “urgent need to safeguard critical water infrastructure against cyber threats.” Just weeks prior to the attack, the FBI and CISA updated their guidelines on securing water systems from cyber risks.

With core infrastructure at risk, it's crucial for businesses to regularly review and strengthen their security policies. Cyber threats are persistent, and organizations must stay vigilant to protect themselves.

THE PEOPLE NEED PASSWORD HELP!

Password complexity requirements are changing. NIST has released the second public draft of its digital identity guidelines, SP-800-63-4, recommending significant changes to traditional password practices. Experts have long advocated for revamping these standards, and in 2016, the Federal Trade Commission encouraged organizations to stop enforcing mandatory password changes.

The new guidelines suggest moving away from the requirement that passwords include at least one number, special character, and a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters. Instead, NIST advises that passwords be a minimum of 15 characters in length and should only be changed when there is evidence of a compromise.

To support this shift, system administrators are encouraged to adopt password management tools. These tools, which are both cost-effective and user-friendly, can help manage complex passwords while facilitating the use of longer, more secure credentials. Got questions? The Tech Collective can help.
