Let’s talk about AI.

And no....not about how it can streamline your daily workflow or write your emails.

Let’s talk about what happens on the other side of the screen: how bad actors are using AI to automate reconnaissance, craft hyper-personalized phishing attacks, and exploit network vulnerabilities at scale.

No company is too small. From a local non-profit to an international corporation, attacks will happen. Threat actors do not care about your head count; automated scripts simply look for an open door.

The real differentiator between a minor blip and a catastrophic breach is the defense running quietly behind the scenes.

A modern, resilient network setup requires more than just standard antivirus software:
- Layered perimeter security and smart firewall rules that block malicious traffic before it reaches user devices.
- Network segmentation to ensure a breach in one endpoint cannot compromise your entire operation.
- Proactive DNS filtering and real-time monitoring to intercept threats before they execute.

AI might be supercharging cyber threats, but a properly secured network architecture keeps you ten steps ahead.
How often does your leadership team review your infrastructure security and exposure to modern automated threats?

Drop your thoughts below.

Small businesses are targeted because attackers know one thing:

A lot of companies have backups. But far fewer have tested whether those backups can actually bring the business back online.

“Backup successful” is not the same as “we can recover.”

If ransomware hit tomorrow, could you answer these five questions?

1. Where is our most important data backed up?
2. Is at least one copy protected from deletion or encryption?
3. When did the last backup complete successfully?
4. When did someone last restore and verify a file, system, or server?
5. How long would it take to get the business operating again?

That fourth question is where most businesses get stuck.

A green checkmark only tells you data was copied.
A tested restore tells you whether that data is usable.

You do not need to start with a full disaster-recovery exercise.

Start simple this week:

• Pick one important file
• Restore it somewhere separate
• Open it and confirm it is usable
• Document how long the process took

That is the beginning of a recovery plan.

If you have never tested a restore, your business may have backups—but you do not yet know if you can recover.

What is one system your business could not operate without for a full day?

Hackers are not hunting Amazon today.

They are hunting businesses that still think they are too small to matter.

The U.S. has 36.2 million small businesses. That is 99.9% of all companies. So of course the volume hits Main Street, not just the Fortune 500.

What the reports actually show:

• 46% of small and midsize owners have already been attacked
• Almost 1 in 5 of those victims filed bankruptcy or closed
• Ransomware showed up in 88% of SMB breaches, vs 39% at big companies
• Median ransom: $115,000

Big companies get the headline.
Small companies get locked files, a dead Monday, and a bill they cannot eat.

I still hear this every week:

“We’re too small. Why would anyone hack us?”

Because it is automated. They do not need your name. They need an open remote login, a reused password, or one inbox with no MFA.

If you run a business under 250 people, be honest in the comments:

Have you ever TESTED a restore from backup, or do you just HOPE it works?

Comment TESTED or HOPE!

The best decision I ever made career-wise was also the most terrifying.

Taking the leap to build PulseLayer Technologies LLC meant stepping away from the known and into a space where the only safety net was my own grit. I used to write about simply surviving and moving forward, even when the progress was messy, slow, and full of self-doubt.

Fast forward to today, and that relentless push is paying off in ways I used to only hope for. I recently had the opportunity to step in and help a local Farmers Insurance agency optimize and secure their IT infrastructure. Getting to provide that peace of mind and watch another business thrive because of our work is exactly why I started this company.

Lately, I’ve also been putting a massive focus on networking, and the connections I’ve made with other driven professionals have been incredibly validating. With another major potential client meeting coming up on the horizon, the momentum is very real.

If you’re currently in the terrifying part of the journey, where the doubts are loud and the progress feels slow, don’t quit. Your current situation is not your final destination. The hard work compounds, and the breakthrough is coming.

Still building. Still learning. Still pushing forward.
