You get a friendly "heads up" call about an overdue invoice. The person on the line is polite and says they’ll email the details over right away. A few minutes later, the email hits your inbox. It looks perfect, so you process the payment to keep things moving.
Here’s the catch: it’s a setup. This is a "vishing" (voice phishing) scam designed to lower your guard. By calling you first, hackers build a layer of trust that makes you less likely to question the fake email that follows. It's a clever way to bypass your usual skepticism.
Jacksonville business owners, if you get a call about a surprise payment, take a beat. Hang up and call that vendor back using a trusted phone number you already have on file: not the number that just called you.
Verification is the best defense against these "pre-warning" tricks. Let's keep those local accounts secure!
Stay safe out there, Jax!
