What a great day at the UNF Internship Fair! 🎓

The Do Good Communications team enjoyed meeting so many talented students and aspiring communications professionals. We received over 50 applicants and are currently reviewing resumes as we continue our internship selection process.

Events like the UNF Internship Fair give us the opportunity to connect with emerging professionals, build meaningful relationships, and help students discover ways to turn what they’re learning in the classroom into real-world experience.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table, introduced themselves, asked questions, and took the time to learn more about what we do!

A special thank you to University of North Florida, UNF School of Communication, and UNF Career Services for hosting these experiences for students.

The kids couldn't get on the apps their friends used, so they built a group chat out of the one place nobody was watching: the comments under NPR podcasts on Spotify. This American Life laid it out this week.

Dave Blanchard, a supervising editor on NPR's Wild Card who monitors the show's comments, first noticed it last fall. Under an episode with Elizabeth Gilbert were posts that made no sense to him. "Gilgamesh quit and I'm crying." "Last Friday I broke up with my GF." "Ah, OK, M-H." The accounts seemed to be answering each other. He figured they were a new kind of bot, deleted the thread, and reported it to Spotify.

Then Hannah Chinn, a Gen Z producer about ten years younger than Dave, looked at the same posts. The emoji usernames, the cartoon avatars, the little "hi"s. Not bots. Kids. Dave later said he needed Hannah as a "generational translator" and felt "very old, very dumb, very out of touch."

The setup was clever. They'd make a public playlist called something like "Let's chat here," drop in a single episode, and talk in that episode's comments so their messages wouldn't get lost in real fan chatter. A TikTok-style video podcast they'd used had been "banned," as Ella put it, so they moved to playlists and comment threads instead.

Ella, 14, told Ira Glass on This American Life why they landed on NPR. "I think we just looked for podcasts that didn't have many comments." The core group was maybe 20, she said, mostly kids whose parents didn't let them on social media at all.

Spotify only added podcast comments in July 2024, then started auto-publishing them that October. It didn't take long for the kids to find the empty rooms and move in.

A little hands-on learning outside the office 💕🪧

This week, we sent our interns to the Jacksonville Public Education Fund’s 1 Mill Referendum Forum so they could see how communications work connects to what’s actually happening in our community.

JPEF is advocating for the 1 Mill measure here in Jacksonville, while our current campaign is focused on educating the public about a measure — not advocating for its passage — in another Florida county.

It gave our interns a chance to see how the goals, messaging and communications approach can look different depending on the role an organization is playing.

It was also a chance to see that the things we talk about every day — school funding, community engagement, messaging and campaign strategy — aren’t just assignments on a task list. These are real conversations that affect real people in communities across Florida.

And, of course, we got in a little hands-on campaign experience too! 🙌 We put up a pro-referendum yard sign outside our office and talked about placement, visibility, high-traffic areas and how even deciding where a sign should go is part of communications and campaign strategy. 🪧✨

At Do Good, we’re proud of the work we’ve done supporting public education initiatives across Florida — and proud to give future communicators a chance to see that work in action. 💕
