On Jan 29 2024, the City of Jacksonville Beach Florida experienced a cybersecurity event which caused significant impacts, including the closing of City Hall, and extreme delays in email delivery. The latest update on Feb 05 indicates systems are still not quite 100% restored. There has yet to be an official disclosure of the specific details, so we can only speculate on the root cause.

SPF isn't just for sunscreen! What is SPF in the context of email, and how does it help reduce Internet spam? SPF stands for Sender Policy Framework, and it is an email authentication mechanism that helps recipients to validate whether an email sender is legitimate.

Everything on the Internet has an IP address, so when an email is sent, the original sender's IP address is recorded in the email header. As the email hops across the Internet to its destination, each hop's IP address is recorded in the email header.

How does SPF come into play? When the recipient receives an email that's from a certain domain (say, cspan.org), the recipient can perform a DNS lookup to the cspan.org domain and ask for that domain's SPF record. The SPF record will contain a list of IP address ranges that are authorized to send email on that domain's behalf. If the original sender's IP address is not in that list, the email is likely spam.

As a business owner why should I care? If your email domain does not have an SPF record configured correctly, email to your customer might get flagged as spam, or automatically deleted.
