You searched for a password app. You found a page with the right logo. You clicked download.

The malware said, “Thanks. I’ll take it from here.” 😬

Researchers found a fake LastPass Authenticator download on GitHub that appeared in search results. If someone ran it, the malware could shut down security software and steal saved credentials.

The everyday lesson: **a familiar logo and a high search ranking do not make a download official.** Start at the company’s website or an official app store, and double-check the address before installing.

If someone at your business already ran a suspicious installer, don’t just delete the download and call it fixed. Have the device checked, and change any saved passwords from a clean device.

We recently saw a warning from someone who thought they were paying a small one-time fee to get an appliance question answered online.

According to their experience, that small charge was followed by a much larger recurring membership fee they weren’t expecting.

Whether you're looking for appliance help, computer support, legal advice, credit help, or any other “Ask an Expert” service online, PAY ATTENTION before entering your credit card.

A few things to check:

🔎 Is this really a one-time charge, or are you starting a subscription?

🔎 Is there a trial period that automatically converts to a paid membership?

🔎 How much will you be charged after today?

🔎 How often will you be charged?

🔎 How do you cancel?

🔎 Take a screenshot of the offer and terms BEFORE you pay.

And here's another good habit: check your bank and credit card statements regularly. Small recurring charges can go unnoticed for months.

The internet has made it incredibly easy to get help.

Unfortunately, it has also made it incredibly easy to accidentally subscribe to something you never intended to buy.

We love both of you. But the first one is usually a LOT easier to help.

That weird popup, slow computer, printer that randomly disappears, email acting funny, or program that suddenly starts crashing? Those are usually signs that something needs attention — not your computer asking for a little alone time.

That’s exactly what they’re counting on.

Fake virus protection and antivirus renewal notices are a favorite scam because that big unexpected charge makes people immediately think, “OH HECK NO!” and call the cancellation number.

And guess who answers? Not Norton. Not McAfee. Not Microsoft. Your friendly neighborhood scammer. 😬

They may ask for your credit card information, bank information, or even convince you to let them remotely access your computer so they can “process your refund.”

If you get one, don’t click the link, don’t call the number in the message, and definitely don’t let anyone remote into your computer. Go directly to the company’s real website or check your actual account.

You know what's funny?

Hackers do not always “hack” their way into your computer.

Sometimes they just ask nicely. 😏

They may pretend to be your boss, your bank, Microsoft support, a delivery company, or even someone offering free coffee. Their goal is to make you panic, get excited, or act before you stop and think.

That is called social engineering: manipulating people into giving away passwords, verification codes, money, or sensitive information.

Before clicking, replying, paying, or sharing anything:

✅ Verify the request another way
✅ Never share a verification code
✅ Be suspicious of urgency
