A fast computer and fast internet are not the same thing.

A newer or more powerful computer can open programs and handle tasks quickly, but it cannot make a slow internet connection faster. If your internet service, Wi-Fi signal, router, or network is struggling, websites may still load slowly, videos may buffer, and calls may cut out.

The opposite is also true. Fast internet will not fix a computer that is running slowly because of an aging hard drive, limited memory, low storage space, too many background programs, malware, or other system problems.

The key is figuring out where the slowdown is actually coming from: the computer, the internet connection, the Wi-Fi setup, or a combination of them.

Full Wi-Fi bars, but your internet still feels slow?

Those bars only show how strong the connection is between your device and your router. They do not show how fast or reliable the internet coming into your home actually is.

Slow internet can be caused by too many devices using the network, poor router placement, interference from walls or electronics, or a problem with your internet provider.

Your email password protects a lot more than just your inbox.

Think about how many times you’ve clicked “Forgot Password” and had a reset link sent to your email. If someone gains access to your inbox, they may also have a way into your banking, shopping, social media, cloud storage, and other accounts.

That’s why your email should have a strong, unique password that you don’t use anywhere else. And whenever possible, turn on two-factor authentication for an extra layer of protection.

Scary pop-up on your computer? Don’t panic.

A full-screen warning saying your computer is infected, hacked, or locked doesn’t automatically mean it’s real. Many scam websites use these alerts to scare you into calling a fake support number or clicking something you shouldn’t.

Don’t call the number. Don’t click the pop-up.

Try Alt + F4 to close the window. If that doesn’t work, use Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find your browser, and select End Task.

If you clicked anything, downloaded a file, entered information, or gave someone remote access, it’s a good idea to have your computer checked.

Before you click, check who actually sent it.

Scammers can make an email look like it came from a company, coworker, friend, or even someone you regularly do business with—but the full sender address can tell a very different story.

Take a few seconds to open the sender details and check the email domain. If something looks unfamiliar, random, or just slightly off, don’t click the link.
