One of the unexpected benefits of getting older is gaining clarity.
When I first started my graphic design business over 20 years ago, I thought great design was about creating something that looked amazing. Winning awards, impressing clients, and producing visually stunning work felt like the ultimate goal.
Today, I see things differently.
I've learned that beautiful design without strategy is just decoration.
A logo isn't a brand. A website isn't a marketing strategy. A brochure isn't a sales plan.
As I've gained experience, my conversations with clients have changed. I spend less time asking, "What colors do you like?" and more time asking, "What are you trying to accomplish?" and "What problem are we solving?"
That's because good design should do more than look professional—it should communicate, build trust, create recognition, and help a business grow.
Getting older has also taught me that not every project is the right project, not every client is the right client, and sometimes the most valuable thing you can offer is honest advice instead of simply saying "yes."
Experience doesn't just make you a better designer. It makes you a better listener, a better strategist, and a better business partner.
I'm still passionate about great design—but today I'm even more passionate about helping businesses build brands that are memorable, meaningful, and built to last.
What's one lesson your years of experience have taught you about your profession?
