The first Earth Day was celebrated in the US on April 22, 1970. Millions came together to protest against environmental degradation & advocate for environmental protection. The event was organized by Senator Ga***rd Nelson, along with environmental activists & organizations, to draw attention to the urgent need for environmental conservation & sustainability.

While today is “Earth Day”, we believe the earth should be celebrated every day because she still very much needs our protection, nurturing & advocacy.

Here are three things you can do to make a positive impact on Earth Day, and every day…

-> Participate in a local environmental event, like a community cleanup or planting trees: Check local community calendars, environmental organizations or social media for events happening in your area.

-> Reduce, reuse & recycle: Make an effort to reduce your consumption, reuse items & recycle correctly. There are proper ways to recycle. Learn them & share.

-> Get outside: Take a walk in a park, go for a hike, enjoy a picnic. Do something to remind yourself how precious Mama Gaia is.

Make Earth Day an Every Day commitment by taking care of her & each other.

International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is a day to celebrate transgender people & raise awareness about the discrimination they face.

The day was first observed in 2009 & was created by transgender activist Rachel Crandall in response to the lack of visibility of transgender people in society. The day aims to celebrate the accomplishments of transgender people & increase their visibility in mainstream society.

Join us in raising awareness & support for the transgender community by wearing the colors of the transgender flag, organizing events & rallies and sharing stories & resources about transgender issues on social media.

Whether you know someone who identifies as transgender or not, our hope is that you open your heart & mind to the understanding that we each walk a unique path, none better than any other.

If you’ve been touched by someone with Down syndrome, you’ve felt the bright light they shine. So let’s celebrate them, as well as those who love them and care for them, by shining a light on what Down syndrome is and a few of the organizations supporting individuals/families with Down syndrome.

*Did you know…

🧦Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21, altering the course of development and causing the characteristics associated with Down syndrome.

🧦Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. Approximately one in every 772 babies in the US is born with Down syndrome – about 5,100 each year.

🧦Down syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels.

🧦Life expectancy for people with Down syndrome has increased dramatically in recent decades – from 25 in 1983 to 60 today.

🧦People with Down syndrome attend school, work, participate in decisions that affect them, have meaningful relationships, vote, and contribute to society in many wonderful ways.

🧦All people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate and is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses.

🧦Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care, and positive support from family, friends, and the community enable people with Down syndrome to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
*NDSS Facts, Myths & Truths about Down Syndrome

Join us in bringing awareness to World Down Syndrome Day by making a financial donation, volunteering, wearing blue and yellow, lighting up a landmark (or your house) and/or wearing your favorite odd socks - since the 3 strands of Chromosome 21 just happen to look like socks.

Self-Injury Awareness Day, or SIAD, is a global awareness event that brings attention to self-harm with the intention of helping people who practice it.

According to nationaltoday.com, here are the five things to know about self-harm:

1. It’s not an accident. Self-harm is intentional, purposeful behavior.

2. It’s not about getting attention. People who hurt themselves frequently consider it a private thing and try to hide their behaviors.

3. Anyone can do it. Contrary to popular belief that only ‘emos’ self-harm, anyone close to you could be self-harming, no matter their age, gender, race, or lifestyle choices.

4. It’s more mental than physical. Self-harming is only a physical manifestation of mental stress and people frequently self-harm to release stress, gain some control, or feel alive.

5. It’s not necessarily about su***de. Even though some people who self-harm feel suicidal, many see self-harm as a way to feel alive.

To observe Self-Injury Awareness Day,

-> Check on a friend / young person in your life. It’s possible to feel alone even when surrounded by friends. Use today to check on a friend or someone who might be struggling. Let them know you are there for them.

-> Wear an orange ribbon to show your support for the cause and anyone who might be struggling. It’s a great way to identify yourself as a safe person for someone who is struggling.

-> Speak to a professional. If you or someone you know engages in cutting or other self-harm practices, seek support from a mental health professional. There’s absolutely no shame in taking care of yourself or the people you care about by seeking help.

-> Donate your time, energy or money to a nonprofit that offers support resources to those in need.

In case you are in need of support or want to , here are some organizations offering support to those who self-harm:

National Alliance on Mental Illness
Fountain House
Self-Injury Foundation
YoungMinds
