SMBs can reduce disruption by knowing what their AI depends on.
Start with model lineage, a tested fallback, and evidence from your stack.
1. A federal notice makes model provenance a procurement issue.
Today's Federal Register publishes the DHS DeepSeek exclusion/removal notice for federal civilian agencies. It covers DeepSeek and affiliates, plus third-party products and services developed using covered implementations. Publication is new; the underlying order is older. This is not a blanket ban on private-sector SMB use. [1]
DO THIS: For federal-facing work, inventory embedded models and hosted services. Ask suppliers about covered dependencies, then review applicable restrictions and any replacement or exception process.
RESULT: Track dependencies with known provenance, unresolved supplier questions, and decisions awaiting approval. These are review measures, not claimed compliance outcomes.
Next, check whether your workflow can survive a provider change.
2. New reporting raises questions about Anthropic's cloud dependencies.
TechCrunch, citing a WSJ report on a leaked draft S-1, describes capacity pressure, prospective cloud commitments, and customer concentration. No official public filing was located in this review. These are attributed reports, not audited findings or proof of an outage. [2]
DO THIS: Pick one critical AI workflow. Test a fallback provider with approved data and record what breaks: prompts, tools, outputs, latency, or data handling.
RESULT: Measure successful task completion, switching time, and changes in cost and errors. A fallback is not ready just because a second API key exists.
There is also a new technical option to evaluate.
3. Google announced open-source TorchTPU for native PyTorch on TPUs.
The Apache-2.0 backend supports eager ex*****on and torch.compile. Google's performance figures are vendor-reported, not a guarantee that every model will work unchanged or cost less. Cloud hardware costs remain separate. [3]
DO THIS: If you run PyTorch workloads, test one representative model before considering a migration. Check operator coverage, compilation behavior, hardware access, and engineering effort.
RESULT: Compare latency, correctness, total run cost, and setup time against your current stack. Use your workload, not a headline benchmark, to decide.
Which check comes first for your team: model inventory, provider fallback, or hardware portability?
