We posted RPM Remote Print Manager® ("RPM") to the website last night. Please see the product roadmap at https://www.brooksnet.com/rpm-remote-print-manager-development-roadmap. The most notable change is possibly that text printing using the printer settings you specified, is restored to working order. It was using default settings, briefly.

This development roadmap/change log details new features and issues resolved in RPM releases

I used to consult in the IT world. I have a story you may appreciate if you are a systems integrator or an IT solutions person. It's about how we could meet most of a particular customer's requirements "out of the box" and then add one simple piece to wrap it up. Looking forward to comments, suggestions, etc.

Two of the top tasks our customers talk with us about or search our website regarding are creating PDFs and watermarking. You probably know this, but watermarking refers to adding one or more images to selected pages, either on your printed output or a PDF file.

It's easy to do with RPM Remote Print Manager® Elite. In this post, we show you how to accomplish each of these tasks. Along the way, we explain how to organize your watermarks so that you can use them any way you like.

Please check out this article if you are interested in watermarks, and contact our technical support staff to talk over your situation.

We are happy to get a lot of new questions about our folder watcher product. We call it Queue Folders because we designed it to work with our print server software, RPM Remote Print Manager® ("RPM").

In this post, we describe how to set up RPM to work with Queue Folders to achieve literal "drop the file in the folder and print immediately." After a brief setup, I copied a couple of files to a folder and had them print immediately, faster than I could move my hand from the mouse back to the keyboard.

For more information, check out the post, and if you have any questions, please contact us.

If you have software in your enterprise that sends prints to a bi-directional printer, such as any printer that uses JetDirect for communication, you might be interested in this. We recently posted a video about our bi-directional printer support in RPM Remote Print Manager® print server software. It's a module we introduced a few months ago, and it's already helping customers print and generate PDFs on the side without making a single change to their enterprise software.

We call this module AppSocket, which is one of the names commonly used for this method. Our implementation is relatively complete and very quick. We've included the ability for the software to query printers in your network, to better emulate specific models. For some, that may be necessary. We even support the printer serial number for those who rely on asset management.

This video covers set up. You'll notice that there are very few steps, and in the demo, we were up and running in a manner of a few minutes. Check out the video then talk with our technical support if this looks like a fit for you.

Depending on your print environment, you may need to do the same thing one of our customers did. They printed customer paperwork on network printers at their order fulfillment stations. At the same time, they also generated PDF versions of this same paperwork, to store on network file servers for their statewide operation.

It was important to this customer that during their peak hours of the day, the print jobs appeared as soon as possible. The PDF documents could wait, and this was even more of an issue when their statewide network was busy. Printing delays were never tolerable.

This customer used the Elite edition of our RPM Remote Print Manager® ("RPM") product to prioritize their print operations. We recently posted an article describing how the priority system works in RPM so you can try this out for yourself.

If this seems useful to you, please check out the article, and give us a call! We'd love to learn about your situation and brainstorm with you.

We recently released an article on securing the RPM Remote Print Manager® ("RPM") print server. The fact is that RPM is already very secure, but there are a few things you can do to make life easier for yourself.

This article discusses several types of probes we have been running into more often recently. We also include our recommendations on what you can do about these probes, and what we have done proactively to secure your job data and prevent problems.

Announcing a new update for RPM

Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, we rolled out some updates and enhancements for RPM Remote Print Manager® ("RPM"). Among the top candidates for mention:

-- we looked into reasons that print jobs would not print when you restart the RPM service; and, as a result, all eligible jobs start that much faster on startup
-- we rolled out a new method of accessing the database which hopefully does not invite interference with so-called "security" software

We also give you a heads up when an incoming print job attempts to create a new queue in RPM, whether you allow that or block.

There are quite a few changes and additions in this release. Please check it out!

Adding bi-directional printing support

It's common for printers to emulate HP's JetDirect or AppSocket protocol. When a print application sends a job with that protocol, it often embeds "Printer Job Language" (or, PJL) commands before and after the actual print job. Printers use these commands or ignore them, and life goes on as usual.

We ran into trouble with this and our RPM Remote Print Manager® because some PJL commands expect a response. One of our auto dealership customers ran into this and asked for our help. A document management company we often work with had recommended us to convert their print jobs to PDF, while still printing immediately.

We now offer a solution to that problem which we call AppSocket. It's an additional print protocol in RPM, meaning we can receive your jobs and send printer-like responses to your print application. The dealership customer is pleased.

We have added bi-directional printing support to RPM. We refer to this protocol as AppSocket. It emulates the JetDirect or AppSocket protocols widely used by high-end printers and applications worldwide. Bi-directional printing allows client applications to query for status on a printer and signific...
