Consumer Tips for Purchasing a New Vehicle during the Holidays!!! FYI...

•Before you visit a dealership, research the prices and features that are available for the vehicle you are interested in purchasing.
•Consider getting a car loan from your bank or credit union before you visit the car dealer.
•Have your research and prices with you when you visit a dealership to help you negotiate the price and the features you want.
•If you have a trade-in vehicle, check its value with the NADA (National Automobile Dealers Association) Guide, available on the web at www.nadaguides.com before visiting a dealership.
•If you are trading-in a vehicle, bring your Maryland Certificate of Title and lien release (if applicable).
•If your Maryland Certificate of Title is lost, ask the dealer to apply for a duplicate title on your behalf.
•Bring your insurance information and registration plates if you wish to transfer them to the new vehicle.
•Read every document that you sign. If you do not understand something, ask questions until you do.
•Do not sign any blank papers.
•When purchasing a used vehicle, request to see the prior title. The dealer should have the title in his possession before selling the vehicle.
•There is no 3 day return policy unless the dealer puts it in writing.
•Verbal agreements are difficult to prove, all agreements should be in writing.
•Ask for the history of the vehicle. The dealer may provide a Carfax or Autocheck report or you may want to get one yourself.
•A used vehicle sold by a dealer must be inspected. Ask to see the inspection certificate.
•Remember that the inspection is only for safety and is no guarantee of the vehicle's mechanical soundness. Always test-drive the vehicle. If possible, have your own mechanic look at the vehicle.
•If you trade a vehicle and the dealer is to pay off an existing loan, follow up with your lending institution to make sure they do.

So...when I registered all these holidays purchases it will be smooth sailing for all parties involved.

Spring is right around the corner!!! Yippy!!!!

Maryland requires that off-road vehicles such as ATV's, mopeds and scooters, are titled and have a decal.

If you purchase from a dealer, in most cases the dealership will handle the titling and issue you an off-road vehicle (ORV) decal. Otherwise, if you purchase from a private party you must title the vehicle at a title service office, (Nash Tag & Title Services) smile.

Bring with you:

Proof of ownership. This may include the original Certificate of Origin (if purchased new) or the vehicle's title (if purchased used). If you buy a used vehicle without a title, you must present the previous owner's Certificate of Origin and a bill of sale. If you cannot produce proof of ownership, submit a completed Affidavit of Ownership Moped, Motor Scooter & Off-Road Vehicle (Form VR-450).
A completed Application for Certificate of Title (Form VR-005).
A competed Application for Title Decal for Motor Scooters, Mopeds, ATV’s, and Off-Road Motorcycles ( VR-450).

Proof of purchase. If the vehicle was purchased from an out-of-state dealer, you'll need to provide a bill of sale. If it was purchased from a private party, show a bill of sale (only if there's no room on the title to include the purchase price) that includes the signatures of the buyer(s) and seller(s), the vehicle's make, identification number and purchase price. A notarized bill of sale will be required if any of the following conditions apply:
The vehicle is 7 years old.
The purchase price is at least $500 and below the vehicle's book value.

Certificate of Inspection

A Safety Inspection is required for all used cars, trucks, tractors, trailers, motorcycles, special equipment, and class "B" for hire vehicles being titled and registered in Maryland. They must be inspected by a licensed Maryland inspection station, such as automobile dealers, service stations and specialized automobile service centers. A certificate of inspection issued by the inspection station within the previous 90 days of the vehicle titling must accompany the Application for Title. To avoid delay, compare the vehicle identification number (VIN) entered on the inspection certificate with the VIN on the vehicle plus the vehicle ownership documents to make certain they agree. Altered inspection certificates will not be accepted.

If you purchase a used vehicle and cannot transport it to an inspection station to have the vehicle safety inspected, you may request a 30-day temporary registration when you title your vehicle.

Registration for Business Owned Vehicles

All businesses wishing to register a vehicle will be required to show proof of the legal existence of their business. The business will be given a number with a "Z" to identify it. The Application for Certificate of Title (form number VR-005) will request a copy of the business license.

If a Maryland title is being submitted for the vehicle, please complete a Business Entity Submission of Proof for Vehicle Titling (Form -475) to verify that the vehicle is being used for a business.

Military Personnel Temporarily Stationed in Maryland

If you are temporarily stationed in Maryland and you are a member of the armed forces of the United States or of the United States Public Health Service and you are on active duty in this State or an adjoining state or the District of Columbia, you do not need to register your passenger vehicle in this State if your vehicle is currently registered in your state of residence.

If you are establishing residency in Maryland you must title and register your vehicle within one year of moving to Maryland. If you delay beyond one year, you will not be eligible for a TAX CREDIT for any titling tax paid in another state.
