I recently came across a phrase I'd never heard before.

Rust-out.

We've all heard of burnout.

Burnout is real. Research suggests recovery from burnout can take one to three years.

But burnout isn't the only thing happening to women of a certain age.

Rust-out isn't doing too much. It's doing too little that matters. It's that slow erosion that happens when you've accomplished what you set out to accomplish, but your heart is quietly telling you there's still more in you.

We returned to the ballroom. Waiting at every seat was a beautiful red envelope tied with a satin ribbon.

We were told not to open it until everyone was seated. Finally, she smiled and gave us permission.

She never connected her story to mine.

She never helped me see what would be different in my life if I worked with her.

She never made me feel like I belonged in the future she was describing.

She assumed I would connect the dots. She assumed her outcome was the outcome I wanted for my life and my business.

How could she know? She didn't even take the time to add me to her invite list.

Looking back, that's how it felt. I wasn't a prospective client. I was a warm body filling a seat so her film crew could get B-roll.
