That slow old laptop your employee is putting up with is costing you more than a new one would.

It's easy to treat a computer as something you only replace when it dies. As long as it still switches on, a new one feels like money you don't need to spend.

Every slow start-up in the morning, every wait for a file to open, every frozen call someone has to drop and rejoin is a couple of minutes gone.

The once-a-year security training most businesses run does almost nothing, because people forget it within weeks and the threats keep changing.

Training works when it's small, frequent, and tied to real examples. A 5-minute reminder once a month sticks far better than a 60-minute session once a year. And it lands harder when it uses the scams hitting businesses, like the fake "paste this command" prompts or the AI voice calls impersonating the boss.

Good training also makes it safe to report mistakes. If an employee clicks something and worries they'll get in trouble, they'll keep it to themselves, and that silence is how a small problem becomes a breach. Tell your team plainly that reporting a click the moment it happens means no blame. That's how you catch most attacks early.

You don't have to build this yourself. Ask your IT provider what ongoing awareness training they offer, and whether it includes short, regular refreshers and simulated phishing tests. If your current setup is one slideshow a year, that's the thing to fix.

A company called Klue got breached in June 2026, and dozens of other businesses lost customer data because of it, including LastPass and BeyondTrust.

Klue makes a tool that connects to Salesforce. To use it, businesses gave Klue a digital access pass (called an OAuth token) that lets it reach their Salesforce data without a password. A group calling itself Icarus got into Klue, stole those access passes, and used them to pull customer records out of every connected Salesforce account.

This is the risk with every app you connect to your email, CRM, or file storage. You're handing it a key to your data, and if that app gets breached, your data goes with it.

What to do:
* In your Salesforce, Microsoft 365, and Google accounts, review the list of
connected apps and third-party integrations.
* Remove anything you don't recognize or no longer use.
* For the apps you keep, check what access each one needs. Many ask for far more than they use.

The accounts that hold your customer list are worth this 20-minute review. A forgotten app connection is exactly how this kind of breach starts.

Your password isn't protecting you the way you think it is.

Reused passwords, sticky notes, and convincing fake login pages are still the #1 way businesses get breached — and traditional multi-factor authentication (text codes, approval prompts) can still be tricked.

Your customers are getting their answer before they ever reach your website.

Search Google for almost anything now and there's a good chance an AI-written answer sits at the top of the page. They already show up on a large share of searches, and that share keeps climbing.

When it's there, most people read it and never click through to a website at all.

That changes how people find you. Someone used to search a question your business could answer, land on your page, look around, and get in touch. Now the AI hands them the answer and they move on, and they never see you.

The businesses that get quoted inside those AI answers are getting more visits than before. So it's worth becoming the source it pulls from.

Start with your website. Make sure it answers the questions your customers ask, in plain words rather than marketing waffle, because that's what the AI picks up.

Keep your Google Business Profile filled out and correct.

And get your name onto other respected sites in your field. The more solid places that mention you, the more the AI leans on you.

Some of your company files may be readable by anyone on the internet who has the link, and you'd never know.

When you share a file in Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, or Dropbox, you usually get two choices: share with specific people, or share with "anyone with the link." The second one is fast and easy, which is why people pick it. But a link can be forwarded, copied into an email, or left inside another document, and anyone who ends up with it can open the file, with no login or permission check needed.

Fix it:
* Change your default to share with named people or groups instead of "anyone with the link," so only the people you choose can open the file.
* Audit what's already open. In Google Drive, you can filter by "Shared" and review what's set to link access. In OneDrive or SharePoint, use "Manage access" on your sensitive files and folders.

Pay special attention to anything with customer data, financials, or contracts. Those are the files where open link-sharing does the most damage.

Microsoft has switched on a new AI assistant inside Microsoft 365 called Copilot Cowork.

Regular Copilot helps you write or summarize while you work. Copilot Cowork goes further. It runs whole multi-step tasks on its own, like organizing files, pulling information out of documents, and sending emails, then hands back the finished result.

It became generally available worldwide on June 16, 2026, for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers.

Instead of a flat monthly fee, Cowork charges by usage, through what Microsoft calls Copilot Credits, at about one cent per credit. A few small tasks won't cost much. A whole team running it all day can add up faster than a fixed subscription.

If you're going to let your team try it, set spending limits first. Microsoft lets you cap usage at the organization, group, or individual level. Decide what you're comfortable spending before you turn people loose on it.

If you open an email attachment that looks like an image and it asks you to log in, close it.

There's a phishing trick going around this year that hides inside picture files, and it gets past the filters most businesses rely on.

It uses a file type called SVG. It's an image format, but unlike a normal photo, it can carry code inside it.

Someone double-clicks the attachment expecting a picture. Instead it opens in their browser, runs, and sends them to a fake Microsoft login page built for their exact email.

The email system lets it through because, as far as it can tell, it's just an image. Researchers flagged a wave of these in early June.

A picture should never send you to a login screen. So if you open an attachment and it asks for your password, don't type it in.

And be careful with any image you weren't expecting, especially one ending in .svg. People almost never send those on purpose.

Ask your IT provider to block SVG attachments. Hardly any business needs to receive them, so blocking them costs you nothing.

If a hacker gets into one of your email accounts, one of the first things they do is set up a hidden forwarding rule.

That rule automatically sends a copy of certain emails, usually anything about invoices, payments, or banking, to an outside address the attacker controls.

Even after you notice something's wrong and change the password, the rule keeps feeding them your mail. That's how a single break-in turns into months of invoice fraud.

Check your own account right now:
1. Open Outlook on the web, click the gear icon (Settings), then Mail.
2. Look under both "Rules" and "Forwarding".
3. Delete any rule you didn't create, especially ones that forward to an outside email address or move finance emails into an odd folder.

Then ask your IT provider to do two things across your whole organization: block automatic forwarding to outside addresses, and turn on an alert whenever a new forwarding rule is created.

A forwarding rule is invisible to the person whose account it's running on, so the only way to catch one is to look.
